I am very interested in turning Interleaving off for my home connection, and want to finalise my research with personal opinions from other Geekzone ADSL users - especially other customers of TelstraClear. I am on ADSL2+ - my line stats are as follows: Attenuation: 6 - 11 dB Download Rate: ADSL2+: 14.0 - 15.9 Mb/s, VDSL2: 16.7 - 18.8 Mb/s Upload Rate: ADSL2+: 1.2 - 1.3 Mb/s, VDSL2: 4.0 - 8.3 Mb/s (I'm on ADSL 2+ - by looking at this I may also need to check my lines in the house but because I don't own the property it's not a major issue as my router reports about 12-16 db and 10-12mbps DL and 0.9-1.1mpbs UL) What's your guys opinions on me getting my interleaving switched off to lower latency? Most of the connection is used in video streaming and online gaming (primarily YouTube and League of Legends). Has anyone had much experience in Christchurch area for any of the above services-eg Interleaving on vs off? Thanks everyone :)

If your line is clean and stable then interleaving's not really necessary, turning it off will decrease latency. However if there are line errors the interleaving helps reduce the need for retransmits. See what your actual SNR is (not margin) and what kind of error rate you're getting. Those are the best indicators of whether interleaving off will be a good or a bad thing over all.

I'll have to wait until I'm home from work to confirm my SNR but i'm pretty sure it's quite high - from memory about 20-25? And i've never seen any packet loss on the hundreds of tests I've done, and very very rarely over traceroutes or pings (one in a few hundred at worst) will i drop a single connection. Based on other forums/topics/googling, this sounds ideal for switching interleaving off. Would you agree? Thanks for your reply :) Josh

Interleaving will disguise line errors, so don't trust what you're seeing at a protocols level. Check what the modem is saying about the connection :)

SNR upstream 13.1db downstream 13.0db Attenuation upstream 7.5db downstream 14.5db I've turned my interleaving off - but it will take up to 24 hours to kick in. If i have made a mistake based on said above information (you think) let me know - ill promptly get it turned back on xD. Otherwise i'll give it a test run and see how it goes :)

nah keep it off! i always get it turned off! that 15ms of latency is important to get the headshot :P

Interleaving off is better by far, unless you have a terrible line.

Update for those who helped: Ping is considerably lower in most scenarios - all my international traffic is at least 20 ping better off and my national ping is practically 0 now. I haven't noticed much net cutting off but it may have happened once or twice without it realising (obviously it catches up so quickly it's hard to tell). As i stated previously, I cannot install a master splitter:p I wish I could but the reality is, it's not my house nor is it under my name therefore I cannot speak directly to the landlord...plus I don't know how long i'll be here for so It may not be worth the costs :) TL;DR it's been great gaming with 20-25 lower ping than everyone else in the South Island xD
