still having problems! and don't know what to do.. Is it worth me getting a new router? or is this just going to happen again..?

I used to get random disconnections and have reduced them somewhat via the following.

1. Got a new cable modem
2. Changed all the internal IP address on my network away from the 192.168.1 range

But they still occur. Before doing this the outages could last a minute or so and occasionally I had to power cycle the modem and/router

Now they occur for a few seconds - i.e. click to a site, site not found, try again and after 2 or 3 goes, it starts up. Now it's mainly annoying more than anything else but still it's not entirely satisfactory.




System One: Popcorn Hour A200,  PS3 SuperSlim, NPVR running on Gigabyte Brix, Sony BDP-S390 BD player, Logitech Revue, Pioneer AVR, Panasonic 60" 3D plasma

System Two: Popcorn Hour A200 ,  Oppo BDP-80 BluRay Player with hardware mode to be region free, Vivitek HD1080P 1080P DLP projector with 100" screen. Harman Kardon HK AVR 254 7.1 receiver, Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player, Roku XS media player

Hi all

I used to have major problems with random disconnects, up to 6 times a day, with a WRT54G that a friend of mine had given me.

I finally got around loading up DD-WRT last month and haven't had any disconnects since. I only wish I had done it early.

Ascent has these for $92 and I followed the instructions on this site, http://www.scorpiontek.org/portal/content/view/27/36/.

Another vote here for the DD-WRT firmware on a WRT54G.
I too had frustrating disconnects with the stock standard WRT54G firmware (which itself was better than a Netgear WRG614 I had a few years before that).

DD-WRT works flawlessly, the configuration UI is better, and the firmware upgrade process is well documented at the Scorpiontek.org URL above.
The following (original) URL is also useful for a cross reference http://www.bitsum.com/openwiking/owbase/ow.asp?WRT54G5%5FCFE#h6, in particular the tftp instructions as the final step. Your Mac, unix or linux install will already have a tftp tool (and man page) at the command line, so you won't need a GUI. The bitsum.com URL also provides commands for setting your MAC address if you haven't already baked it in to the firmware image.

I've just switched to Telstra this week.

Today after work I'd been using the internet fine for about 3 hours when between 9pm and before 10pm I had 5 disconnects. 

During this time I tried 2 different modems (Linksys AM300 and Dynalink RTA1320) both exhibited the same behaviour.  DSL would connect then PPP and then after about 10min it would lose both and reconnect.

After 10pm it was fine.  Seems a bit strange, hopefully it was some ports being shuffled at the exchange and not some reoccuring problem.

that dd-wrt firmware sounds good, however useless for me as i have a netgear.

I think the fact you have a netgear is the problem... Trust me, the money you will spend on a WRT54GL will pay itself off in less than a month from lack of frustration and having a solution that you plug in and it just works (after flashing the firmware to DD-WRT).  Then flick your old netgear on Trademe.

Agreed.
I've been through Netgear and D-Link before finally seeing the light and going with the WRT54GL running DD-WRT.
It's been running flawlessly ever since.

Anyone had random disconnections due to IP conflicts on the telstra cable network before ?
I'm into my third day of constant disconnections. I have my PC directly connected to the modem and have tried my Laptop and xbox and they all report the same IP conflict.
Had a call from an engineer today who said, "it's fixed" ... not quite .. check this out !
