Topic # 80583 1-Apr-2011 21:29 Send private message

I'm having this really annoying problem with our internet connection on TelstraClear cable.  What will happen is occasionally the internet will randomly drop for about 5 - 45 seconds and then come up again.  I had an old cheap router, so thought that might be the problem and went out and brought a linksys wireless n gigabit router(WRT320N).  The problem is still there, so I am assuming it's not a router problem.  I've power cycled the router that many times and it only works for about a day or so, then the problem returns.

It happens on both wired and wireless devices, and I can still access other computers locally when it happens.  Can anyone help me determine whats happening?

Thanks!

Is your cable modem getting hot? Do you have it shoved in a box somewhere? If so, try getting some airflow around the box. Putting it up on clothes pegs can really help with heat dissipation.

Just a suggestion - I could be way off track here!

Checkout the EPIC5 script I work on, LiCe. Makes console based IRC fun and easy to use, just like the old days!

Thanks for your reply.

I don't think thats the problem, its on a high shelf next to the modem, nas box and printer.  Plenty of room and it doesn't feel as if its hot.

Also I forgot to mention all the status lights are all still on on both the modem and router when the internet drops out.

Really?  Since when?

The one I'm using at the moment is the one the guy told us to use when he came and set up our broadband here about 4-5 years ago.

Since the Clearnet DNS are better maintained and more reliable than the Paradise DNS ones, which always seem to be causing problems.

I can't understand why an ISP provides two sets of redundants DNS, except for legacy purposes. Even so, it would be a lot easier for them to just make the old IPs arrive on the new ones anyway...

So the issue was fixed for a bout a week, however in the last couple of days the problem has returned, however much less frequently.

I'm assuming it must be their end, i'll give them a call on monday.  Is there anything else it could be at my end i could try?

Thanks

Over the past couple of days I've had issues where I can't make new connections but existing ones keep working. For example, I can't browse to any sites, but streaming video continues to play if I'd started it before the dropout. After a minute or so, all is back to normal.

Does that sound like the same issue or does yours drop out completely?

Mine seems to drop out completely.  When i'm playing games online on the ps3, it disconnects which gets really annoying.

when it drops out see if you can ping your router or dns. If your not losing any lights on the cable modem it might be packet loss due to high transmit or receive power on your modem. You can find out by calling and asking them to check it.

I gave them a call today and they said they checked my connection and everything seemed fine from there end.  The only thing he suggested was to disconnect all the devices from the network except for one and see if the problem goes away  =/  I can ping the router and other devices on the local network, and all the lights on the modem and router are all still flashing normally.

I had similar problems with both my Internet & TBox modems and they ended up sending a technician out. He re-did some of the F-type connectors as apparently the ones that I had were incorrectly done (the centre wire wasn't flush with the end of the connector like it should be apparently)

I don't seem to have had any issues since - so perhaps it could be something similar?

Because its just me in the house for the next few days i'll disconnect all the devices except for one like the guy on the phone said, and see if that makes a differents in determining the problem - i doubt it will though.  If not i'll give them another call and see what they do from there.

It just seems weird because we have been with them for probably the last 4 years at least, and never had an issue untill a couple of months ago when the problem started.
