As promised, 2.9.23 is on my T-Box this morning, and yes, we can now re-sort the planner! Best benefit I've seen so far. THANKS!

I had the same issue last night with pixelation - missed the last 2/3 of TV One News.
WRT rewinding issues, I find that occasionally I am unable to rewind a recording if I start to fast forward as soon as I start to watch it. When this happens, I can FF 10 minutes into the program and things seem to settle down (some times), or stop and restart the program. The FF banner seems to hang on screen for several minutes during this jam up too.

Looking forward to tsting the new update tonight.

Some initial thoughts on the latest T-Box software update.

Firstly thanks very much to the Team at TelstraClear for working so hard to try and sort out the various issues, and it's great that the release was available on the announced date.

My biggest gripe with the T-Box has been related to stability, and if the new release fixes this I'll be much happier - I guess time will tell.

My (and my wife's) second biggest issue was the sort order of entries in the Planner. (Incidentally I always wonder why it's called the Planner, when I actually do all my planning in the Guide :))

We were looking forward immensely to having the recorded programs sorted with the latest first, and while the latest release provides the ability to do this, the way it has been implemented unfortunately means that we will probably never use the feature. Here's why:

For me the point of having the programs in reverse order is not about having another interesting way to sort things, but to allow rapid access to the programs I'm most likely to want to watch.

At the moment I happen to have 17 programs recorded, and four programs scheduled to record. These particular numbers may make the example a worst case scenario, but right now it's what I actually have and I think might be a reasonably typical use case.

Using the default scheme:
  • I enter the Planner and the oldest program is selected.
  • To select the latest recorded program to play (17th) I need to press Page Down twice.
  • The 17th program is highlighted as the first entry on the 3rd page and I'm ready to hit OK to start playing.
From entering the Planner there are two key presses until I have my program selected.

Now do the same thing again, but using the new Newest filter.
  • I enter the planner and the oldest program is selected.
  • I press the up arrow to get to the Filter Menu, then the right arrow to select Newest.
  • I then select the down arrow to get back into the list, and the first of my four scheduled programs is highlighted.
  • I then hit the down arrow four more times to select the latest recorded program.
From entering the Planner there are seven key presses until I have my program selected.

What I would like to happen is:
  • I enter the Planner and the recorded programs only are sorted newest to oldest (Either because this is the Planner default, or because the T-Box remembers that this was the filter I used when I was last in the Planner.)
  • The scheduled items do not appear in this list. I rarely look for scheduled entries in the Planner, so I'm happy to select another filter if I want to do this.
  • The newest recording is already selected at the top of the list, and I'm ready to hit OK to start playing.
From entering the Planner there are  zero key presses until I have my program selected.

Using the first two methods the number of key presses required to access a particular program will vary depending on how many other programs are recorded, and how many are scheduled to be recorded. I haven't done the maths, but I suspect the new filter will only be quicker when there are at least 24 items (3 pages worth) recorded. If the suggested method was used, the number of key presses to access a specific item would always be the same regardless of the number of other items on the system.

I understand that UI is a very subjective topic as personal preferences and use patterns come into play, however I would be interested to hear others thoughts on this.

Finally, there is now an Oldest filter which I guess is consistent with there being a Newest filter, but I can't see how this is different to the All filter. If this is correct, having two items in a menu that do exactly the same thing doesn't seem very clever.

Sorry this has got so long, but good UI critical to the product's success and I'd really like to see TelstraClear get it right.

Thanks for reading (if you made it this far),
Pete.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Newest filter: We’ll get that changed in a future update so that the newest recordings are at the top. It should have been done for this update but we didn’t want to delay release.

Programme ends cut off: Many of the networks run over time. Personally, I’ve noticed it too and use a 10 minute buffer just to make sure. The EPG is supplied by the networks and they also control what times they actually start and finish programmes.

Pixilation last night: Service on Cable TV was interrupted at approx. 6:26pm. We switched over to standby equipment as soon as we could. It wasn’t T-Box related.

Pixilation on occasion: There are a number of reasons for this but usually it’s to do with the programme signal that we’re supplied with. We’re talking to the provider to see if this can be improved, however it affects their own transmissions as well.

Buffer enhancements: A future update will provide buffer customisation. This is being scoped now and we’ll take on board your feedback.

Cheers, Gary

Hi Pete, you're correct that the two filters are the same. We plan to get that sorted in the same update that the Newest filter sorts with the newest recordings are at the top.

Must say - I'm impressed at your TV watching ability - we have about 60 recorded programmes at home to view... but then we were away for five nights recently and have been out a few nights. It's terrifying how quickly they add up!

Please keep the feedback coming so we can take it onboard for future updates.

Cheers, Gary

Hi th3r3turn. This is on the list of planned enhancements that our European software developers are working on. There's no firm date yet but I'll let you know more when we know more.

Hi Gary,

I have been watching this thread for months and have just decided to register so that I could pass comment.

Firstly, thanks to the TCL team for this latest update, it is good to see progress is being made.

I have these issues with this latest release:
- Recordings should not be at the top of the 'Newest' filter (as explained by others).
- I would like to see the T-Box remember the last filter I used so that I don't need to re-select it every time, doing so is quite cumbersome.
- Now all programs associated to an HD channel seem to have the HD symbol in the info, even programs that are clearly not HD.  This makes it difficult to figure out which ones are actually HD or not.  This was not the case in the previous release.

Thanks.

IIRC, BBC is a TCL only feed isn't it? Whilst I think the rest come from Freeview/Sky feeds? So if that's the case I'm assuming the equipment was related to Freeview/Sky...

Feel free for someone to prove me wrong :)

Hi kharris,

Thanks for the feedback and welcome to Geekzone.

- Recordings should not be at the top of the 'Newest' filter (as explained by others).

Agree, it should have been done for this update but we didn’t want to delay release.

- I would like to see the T-Box remember the last filter I used so that I don't need to re-select it every time, doing so is quite cumbersome.

We've also noted this one as well, and it's with out European software developers and will happen in a future release.

- Now all programs associated to an HD channel seem to have the HD symbol in the info, even programs that are clearly not HD.  This makes it difficult to figure out which ones are actually HD or not.  This was not the case in the previous release.

You're right. Apologies! We've let the software developers know and will get this corrected in the first release we can.

Cheers, Gary

Hi Fog,

Some channels are sourced locally by TelstraClear and weren't affected.
