TCL - you have until 8.30 to sort out your Network issue - when my wife misses Once Upon a Time, you time is up.

We have been looking fowrard to this all week, we series linked it as soon as we could register it on the EPG, and now we're gonna miss it...

You have an hour, or come get your T-box off the side walk before it rains.

TCL put this on Facebook just before 7 pm:

Hi Guys, some of you in Christchurch maybe having intermittant connectivity, Techs are working now to resolve, Apologies. Tim.

Probably a dumb question after reading a few posts, but anyway .... I've been with TCL for many years and currently have the pre T-Box STB (with no contract) so any recordings are only free-to-air channels made by other means, which is a dual Freeview HD tuner in my PC running NextPVR EPG. I can watch recordings over my network on a number of TV's with media players connected, and this is 99% relaible. However my wife would like to record some of the TCL channels and I some sport (which unfortunately we'd have to watch on just one TV). It looks like I can get a T-Box for 24 months at the same price I'm paying now. Due to the versatility and reliability I'd keep recording Freeview on the PC, but what are the chances of the T-Box reliably recording the other channels, and also working properly when we want to watch live TV? Are they all crappy or just some?
I'm also struggling with the justification of committing to a service that doesn't permit remote programming of recording and on-line access to programs when the opposition does for a similar price.

Watching live TV is generally fine.  Otherwise, expect the box to crash every 20-30 recordings.  It's up to you whether you consider that acceptable or not.

If you had one now, I'd probably say it's not worth switching, it's eventually going to get better (one would hope).  If you don't have one now, I'd wait to hear reports of the quality of the next software release.

I'm personally hoping that this new release will fix the record crash.  But I wouldn't bet any money on it.  TCL have not been at all clear as to whether it will or not.  And that's a worry.

What the hell happend to some of my recordings, a huge chunk of pre-recorded movies, and some series link shows dissapeared!  i recovered 40% of my HDD just by going to sleep and waking up, and had to re do all my series link's.

has something happened recently that could have done this?

Yet again another crash - second in less than a week. And all of this after several weeks with no problems. Both crashes have been while recording 2 channels and watching something else. Last time I was watching Live TV this time I was watching a recorded show and had just deleted that and moved up in the planner to watch something else but when I hit OK it froze. It just should not be doing this - the thing is designed to record 2 channels while watching a third. Even if they can't fix all these crashes could they not hurry up and give us the manual record feature? If a crash happens while watching at least you could reboot and carry on recording and only miss a few minutes of show. I really think Telstra need to be offering some sort of compensation or not charging for the T-Box until it is a properly working unit. Maybe some free Broadband so we can watch all these missed shows OnDemand. Guess I need to go and pull the plug on my T-Box - I did leave it hoping it would unfreeze on its own but I really should know better. Thinking I might just have to suck up the extra cost and switch to MySky.

This is not a problem I have encountered and I hope I haven't jinxed myself by saying that.  I am sure some other people on here have had this happen though.  Not sure if they found out why.

Just to show how random it all is, my T-Box crashes at least once a week, but last night, it was on 2% free, so I deleted a whole load of programmes, viewed many to see if I wanted to keep them - whilst the delete process was happening on other recordings - and meanwhile, it was recording one programme which segued into another.

All of this - which is normally asking for major trouble - and it didn't skip a beat. Worked perfectly throughout, and stayed working. EVEN when I was watching a couple of Coronation Street recordings. ;-)

Go figure.

T-Box has worked very well for me in a household with teenagers that thrash it so I dont understand why others here have had such a bad run.

I suspect this is because like my PC - I power off on a regular basis and dont let the HDD get too full. Others here say you shouldn't have to do that but I think thats a principle rather than practical response.

My wishlist for T-Box would be network access to my server to stream content and a means to save recorded programs to other devices such as my smartphone.

We are about two weeks into use of our replacement T box, this time a brand new one. Recently another user posted a very detailed log he had been keeping of failures/problems with his unit and that prompted a post from TC promising to follow up. I am sure if I had kept a log of issues with our two previous units, it would have looked equally impressive for there were far more problems than those that annoyed me sufficiently to ring TC faults. I am going to start a log for the new (3rd) unit as of now. It has failed once already since installation, but last night it failed part way through recording one half hour programe then failed recording of two later programmes, both had the same scheduled start time but both of different channels and the T box is supposed to be able to handle this. Very annoying to come home, switch the telly on, find a blank Telstra screen (red record light on the box glowing ominously), have to reboot, when back up, look at the planner and find what you can see in the image attached.

In my opinion, the T Box does not meet the requirements of the Consumer Guarantees Act which amongst other things, requires that goods must be of acceptable quality and fit for their particular purpose. Clearly the T box is not fit for purpose.

Is anyone really surprised that they can't get the T-Box to function correctly - It's really nice that they put a banner up advertising the free Soho weekend but last time I checked the was no such thing as Tuesday 10 February.... not in 2012 anyway.  Maybe they are just not good at details. lol

The next Tuesday 10th February is in 2015 - wonder if you'd have a good case to argue that TCL should keep SoHo free until then given the advertising? Laughing

I think it is luck rather than the regular powering off that you do as other people on here do that and it has made no difference and then you have people like me who also power off due to it crashing regularly and I never have it too full.  I don't think people who have it crash are doing anything "wrong" just as I don't think people who have no problems are doing anything "right" - it's just luck!

Wouldn't that be nice but I can't be bothered trying to get through to their non-help desk.  I don't ring up for any issues anymore and I suspect I am not alone.  Maybe that is why they think their t-box as not too bad.... because people have given up complaining!  I wonder how many other threads on GZ have got to 55 pages!  grrrr!
