I shut down my laptop last night, today when I restarted it there was a message saying unable to connect to the internet.

I was using the ethernet connection, I also tried turning WiFi on. This showed it was connected but still no go. When you open the network share/help it looks as if there is a connection to the router/modem. However I am unable to access the NAS nor the network printer, so I figure there is no connection to the router either via ethernet or WiFi.

The other computer in the house is connected via an ethernet cable and works OK. Also I can access the internet via WiFi on my phone. It would seem the problem is with my laptop.

Any ideas on what to look for. I am thinking it's a Windows 7 issue.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 14Z running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit with Office 2010 Professional.

Are you talking about my Xtra IP address?  I don't see how this would be affecting things as other computers connected the the modem/router are working fine.

No I'm not talking about your Xtra public IP address. One would determine if device has private IP address, gateway and DNS server entries.

The wireless connection details show

IPv4 Address  192.168.1.104

IPv4 Gateway  192.168.1.1

IPv4 DNS   122.56.237.1
                210.55.111.1

It's showing connected to router, it shows the router name but says "No internet access".

If I disable the wireless radio there is a red cross through the signal strength icon.  If I plug the ethernet cable in, the ethernet icon shows connected and shows the router name but also says "No internet access".

The ethernet connection shows the IPv4 Address as 192.168.1.101, all the other number are the same.

All the other computers/phones are connecting OK.

I ran some tests on both the ethernet and wireless adapters both had the same items fail. One of the listed items as a possible cause was a firewall blocking access. In desperation I did a system restore and the problem corrected it self.

I'm not sure what was causing the problem but for now it's working.

Change the DNS to google DNS
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

I have seen this a lot over the past few months that the DNS is not always being passed by the modem.
Normally it would affect all computers but deends on how the other network connections are set up.

Flatmate had the same problem with his Dell XPS, looked to be something to do with a bunch of recent windows updates on the 17th in combination possibly with McAfee anti-virus.

Restore to last-known good configuration fixed his problem too

Yep, I came to pretty much the same conclusion after trying many things including the troubleshooter.  I even uninstalled both the wiireless and ethernet cards and rebooted to let windows reinstall the drivers, still  no go.

All the tests seemed to show that the computer was communicating with the router but something was stopping the internet connection from working

I had originally planned to ditch McAfee for Windows Security Essentials but since the laptop came with a 15 month subscription with McAfee I thought I'd give it a go. Perhaps that was a mistake

It is indeed McAfee that has been causing the said issue, I have a mate at work with the same problem who contacted Dell and they have confirmed this.

Suffice to say he's getting rid of McAfee for MSE :)

I have a Dell XPS - I had this issue last week and restored to an earlier config and that fixed the issue

but my dad has Compaq and 2 days after my internet problem, he faced the samething and then I did the system restore on his laptop to an earlier config and all was well.

Not sure which antivirus he is running.. Will have to check that..

I wonder if its Windows Updates doing this or Mc Afee or a combination of both..
