And so it begins. Windows 8 available from 26th October 2012. Here's the first ad:

Yes, no? Why?

Is it going to be as big as Win3.1 -> Win95 with Rolling Stone's Start Me Up?

Loved the win95 ad. The message doesn't seem to have changed much, even if the video quality has!

I will grab a cheap upgrade for my master PC (Win 7). I need to be familiar with it for the support work I do.

May get a second one because of the price! Chary of replacing wife's Vista with 8 as she is pretty technophobic! Perhaps she gets my Win 7.

So, yep, I am in the 'Yes' category.

I think I will wait to see what the general consensus is for older hardware that does not have a touch screen,

I mean, It looks great on tablets, but I am just not sure how all the metro bells and whistles will complicate regular work flows,

+ the whole lack of media centre without extra $$$ is a bit of a pain.....

Yes. Have been running it since last year's dev preview and now on RTM for past month. Have no touch screen but do have the MS multi touch mouse which makes browsing and doing few basic things very easy. Will be buying the surface tablet at launch.

Do we have any official word on upgrade pricing here in NZ yet? I'll probably upgrade at home, if only to get familiar with it.

I do find the new UI split a little unusual but I dont really see it causing me any major trouble. I hope to find myself wondering what all the fuss was about a couple of years down the track, but we'll see.

I'd love to have a smaller touch screen to display the start screen. I'd pop it under my main desktop monitor, probably sloped down between the monitor and keyboard. At the moment though there doesn't seem to be such a thing that has multi touch.

I'd say yes, I am getting a free copy of Win 8 Pro, so will whack it on one of the computers at home.

Awesome

No for me. I played with the preview releases and found the Metro UI counter intuitive on a non-touch screen.

I think it would be awesome on a tablet, but for a desktop PC, I need easier access to be able to multi task. I want windows I can resize and drag around, and a task bar to move between them quickly.

I'm also not going to upgrade to Office 2013. Having used that for a while, I consider it the worst office I have used yet. It looks ugly and basic, and it was impossible to uninstall from my machine (When I uninstalled it, all it did was uninstall the uninstaller).

there will be an offer available on October 26 for NZ$49.99 online to upgrade to Windows 8 and you get Professional with Media Center, NZ$49.99 != $$$

Nope. I tried the dev preview and found it a nightmare to use and a really jarring experience with the "mode switching". I heard that the consumer preview was better so I tried that too and it was still pretty awful.

We're staying on 7 at work as well and avoiding 8 like the plague.

For me its a great big NO

There is no benefit and a lot of cost

Not at home or presonally - not until I have suitable hardware

Not at work - dont need the hassle, down time, reconfuguration  or the "features"

But I expect some of our clients will go with it - which means we will have to support as best we can

Yes, Because I like new things, I also get it via MSDN.

The first Dev preview I hated and moved back to 7 and left it for a release and tried again last month when the RTM came out and i'm loving. Planning on upgrading the rest of the house to it over the new year aswell.

Yes for me.
I looked at the CP and didn't think much of it but have been running the RTM on my laptop since it was available on TechNet.
Getting used to the new way of doing things and liking it now.

One thing I have to ask, what's happened to the 'Manage Wireless Networks' option that was in the Network & Sharing Centre in Windows 7?
I had to change the wireless key on my router at home and could find no way to remove the existing wireless config, in Win8, so that it I could enter in the new wireless key!
In the end I had to run some command line thing to delete the existing wireless network and then I was able to do it.
Not very end-user friendly!

Neither is trying to enter a MAK key on Win8 Enterprise! Had to use a couple of system commands compared to just going into Activation properties on windows 7

We're going to trial it but won't be using it as my main OS that's for sure.
