Oh man, 1366x768...

That screen,

I'm used to the iPad 3rd Gen, I don't know if I could really deal with that low res, 1080P would have been fine,

Price wise is on par with competition though.

I still want one as I think it would be great for my line of work, and as a good take home PC.  Right now I lug my 17" when I go home as the iPad simply can't do enough.

it has a micro sd card slot so I figured, I can expand the memory that way. I feel bad now about not ordering a touch cover as Surface team's AMA on Reddit is using touch cover on their surface tablet to reply to answers there at 80WPM. going to have to buy it later via amazon or something i f they ever sell it.

Just noticed that MS is giving 2 year warranties on Surface tablets so that's nice.

Having installed Windows 8 Pro RTM and returned the start menu via a 3rd party app, I haven't noticed much difference in what I did usually on Windows 7. Just that there is a re-arrangement of toolbars, which are different in appearence compared to Windows 7. Otherwise, things have been running fine.

I guess when Windows 8 is officially released, I'll try Samsung's version of start menu, which appears to be a seperate download (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33642_7-57533210-292/start-menu-resurfaces-on-samsungs-windows-8-pcs/)

I'm planning to wait for the Surface Pro tablets early next year. I've been contemplating getting some kind of laptop/netbook for a while, but like the tablet form-factor. The Asus Transformer intrigued me, but I'm not sold on Android - I'm too heavily invested in iOS with my iPhone and my wife's iPhone and iPad, and we use Windows for everything else. The Asus Transformer didn't really seem to cut it as a "netbook" for me because it wasn't Windows, which meant buying into a third, completely different "ecosystem." Which I didn't want.

The Surface Pro seems to offer the best of both worlds. Full Windows OS, touch/tablet functionality, netbook convenience, compatibility with existing programmes. It won't clash with my iDevices (any more than they currently "clash"). I just hope the pricing of a decent 32GB or 64GB Surface Pro is reasonable. Somewhere between $1200 and $1500NZD for a 64GB with a Type Cover would be nice. I think that would really put the wind up Apple's sails/sales.

1 year warranty in the US, 2 year warranty in the Australia, probably because of the equivalent of their Consumer Guarantees Act

I'm dreading Win8. I have a totally clean screen approach. i put up one of my photos as the wallpaper (or 2 at work on my dual screens) and I enjoy looking at it as I walk past or sit down at the desk. I have zero icons showing. Is it still possible to do this in 8?

on your desktop?

you don't have to put any icons on your desktop if you don't want to

you can also, right click, view, uncheck "show desktop icons"

I don't see why not.  Once you open the Desktop app and leave the Metro UI, it is, for all intents and purposes, the Windows desktop we all know and love (sans Windows/Start button).  You can set the wallpaper just like on Win7.  The only difference in this situation is that whenever you hit the Windows key, yoy get dumped back in Metro, but when you switch back to your desktop apps you see your wallpaper (and absence of icons).

billgates: Pre-ordered my Surface tabelet from US to Youshop. Pre-order is available in US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and France. Did not order a touch or type cover as want to see reviews.

32GB model for US$499. CC has been charged NZ$626.

Just curious, how come you ordered from the US and not like Australia?

My guesses
US$ cheaper, no sales tax when shipping to Oregon, available next week, AU not shipping to Nov 6

Fair enough. I might have to order the 32gb with a black touch cover...
