VLC doesn't have native Blu Ray support. You've always needed to install the libaacs codec to playback Blu Ray with Windows. I suggest you Google it to find out where to download this, because it's not necessary legal to use this software here in NZ to crack DRM.

blu ray drives usually come with free software - either powerdvd or arcsoft total media theatre. I like the arcsoft TMT for use with Media Center myself. i'll probably ditch the powerdvd that came with the drive and buy the TMT - but i'm hoping for a 'holiday special' before I buy... http://www.arcsoft.com/totalmedia-theatre/

I think if you upgrade to windows 8 pro with media centre you will be able to play them using windows media player (http://www.techspot.com/news/48459-windows-8-wont-support-dvd-blu-ray-playback-by-default.html) If you already have windows 8 pro you can get a free key from microsoft (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-NZ/windows-8/feature-packs)

They busted that myth over at AVSforums already :(

I was planning to get a bluray drive for my HTPC and either PowerDVD or TMT.

However looking at the issues people have with the bundled versions of these that come with the drives (and the price of the full versions) I'm thinking it may be easier to just put the bluray drive in my desktop and use MakeMKV (free now, when beta is finished it will still be only $50 a lot less than TMT\PowerDVD full versions...), and use the saved money to buy an extra HDD to rip them to ;-)   "Legal" questions aside, given I will be paying for the Blurays and not sharing the rips I don't see any moral issues doing it this way...
