I dunno, I thought it was pretty good. Just listening to him made me angry with MS all over again. There ARE things I like about Windows 8, but the downsides are just so down!

Just finished watching the "video review". What he talks about "context" is exactly what I've already complained on Windows Phone 7, when Metro was introduced. There's no context. In some apps the bold heading can be touched, in others it can be touch/hold, and in others the bold heading does nothing. I have no idea of which options to touch because some don't do anything. It's a bit better on Windows Phone 8, but still not great. I have not installed Windows 8 on my laptop. It's more than capable but I rather keep Windows 7 on. Even if I have to reinstall one day, it will still be Windows 7. I opened Windows 8 up and my first thought was: "OK, I have to swipe the screen, with a track pad, to get to the applications I want because the tiles are big and they can't all be on the same screen, which is 14". This is not what I would call a good start". For my use I have 'solved' things by getting away from the new UI, the UI formally known as Metro, as fast as I can but it strikes me as silly I have to avoid the the feature MS was promoting. Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I have to search for them to start some items. Access to features that used to be one click is now a "move mouse to right, click here, click there and wait". Things aren't where they are supposed to be. I'm glad I haven't installed Windows 8 on my laptop. I strongly recommend if you intend to Keep 2012, to install something like Start8 which works welll with 2012 and makes it usable remotely. Everything you WANT do to CAN be done in 2012, but like 8, it's usually harder and makes less sense than the current method.

On an exchange server, pin the EMC shortcut to the taskbar - problem solved. Same for other server roles.... Why should you even need a start menu :P Need help implementing Microsoft CRM? I don't run "programs" on my servers. But I like instant access to some of the admin stuff. Having things disappearing on me wasn't fun. Getting to grips with it. Not happy still. I thought the windows 8 animation video summed it up nicely. After using it in beta, the release version lasted all of a week for me until I realised that I couldn't do a full backup (I am used to the windows 7 backup application). It also didn't help that my DVD drive didn't work after installing windows 8 and required an update. I also got annoyed that the WinRT apps had different version than the Win32 apps and the two didn't seem to want to talk to each other in many cases, so I ended up with duplicate applications. I am not a Fan of the metro/tiled UIs as they require too much thinking (I like to focus on getting the task done, not trying to figure out which animated window will launch my application) - I was pretty happy with icons, they didn't move, they stayed in the same location and they didn't change colour and look completely different every 5 minutes. I think I will stick with Windows 7 on the desktop for now.

Funny, for me it was Aero Glass that I found distracting from the task at hand, and welcome its demise. I think the window mode UI chrome in Win8 looks much better - modern, clean, and simple. I also like Explorer's new ribbons. I quickly adjusted my in-development network management application to lock down pinned items on the Start screen tho - otherwise that would have become a mess with everything getting pinned by default. To pin or move something on the Start sceeen, I now just need to unlock it first via a tray menu.

I also like Explorer's new ribbons. The thing is that Aero could be turned on/off. Glass could be turned on/off. You have no option in Windows 8. The lack of options is the problem.
