Just trying to get a laptop at work sorted for Firefox, I have downloaded the file to both the server and installed from there, as well as direct to the desktop.
It installs fine, but when I go to launch it nothing happens, I've even tried to launch it as a new process from the task manager, it seems to flick up as a process for about 1 second, then just disappears.
I have trolled through the firewall settings and permissions etc, just cant seem to find whats blocking it??????

Oh and it's XP as well, not the lovely Vista Laughing

Any Ideas?????

I'm not sure if it makes a difference but do you have administrator access or the right to install programs on the laptop?

Usual questions:

  • Have you rebooted.
  • Are you patched, packed, and up to date?
  • Reinstalled FF?
  • Using latest release build?
  • Windows is legit?
  • Whats the server?
  • Who controls it?
  • Are you part of a domain?
  • Is it a work PC?

Also try to launch Firefox in Safe Mode. The safe mode can be chosen from the Start Menu->Programs->Firefox->Firefox (Safe Mode)

it almost sounds like it's getting blocked by something. rebooting, reinstalling and making sure you have the latest version is the best advice, trying it in safemode is also an excellent idea. have you set it to your default browser or do you still have that set as internet explorer?

on a side note: Tony - How would his copy of Windows being legit have something to do with Firefox breaking? (not questioning you just curious)

Thanks for the ideas guys, so far nothing seems to have worked.

tonyhughes: Usual questions:

  • Have you rebooted. Yes
  • Are you patched, packed, and up to date? Last thing to check
  • Reinstalled FF? Yes
  • Using latest release build? Yes
  • Windows is legit? Yes
  • Whats the server? I have about 35 PC's at work, easier to download to one of our servers once, and push out.
  • Who controls it? Myself and ICT Manager
  • Are you part of a domain? YES
  • Is it a work PC? Yes (Laptop)

My thoughts exactly, the way it flicks up in the task manager as a process, you can see the process number go up by one, and see firefox.exe add to the list, but it lasts about 1 second?????

Ill just check his patching/updates and see how it goes after that?

A Windows .iso downloaded from a not-legit site could be hacked up, missing files, corrupted etc...

i suppose this is possible. didn't really think about that but i suppose thats the risk people take when they download pirated software. i'm quite happy with my legit 32bit & 64bit dual install cd.

have you tried installing an earlier version of firefox? it could be one of the fixes for the latest version doesn't agree with something on your computer, most likely a driver. checked out the mozilla FAQ for answers?
