Hi all,
Am a student in my last year of school and trying to go legit with a lot of the products on my pc. Is really hard since most software isn't actually that cheap (atleast for me). I've been using the xp home key on the bottom of dad's laptop for the last two years but have decided it's prob time for me to get a more "legit" key. I'm keen to get XP pro but really can't afford to fork out $200 for it. Have thought of just buying a broken pc/laptop with a Xp Pro COA but still, i guess from MS terms and conditions that still wouldn't cover it for my pc. I do have XP Pro Corp SP3 and a Corp key from a friends dad's company but I guess thats also not completly legit. I just bought Photoshop CS3 Extended Student version (which feels real good to actually own) and thought there may be a way to get a cheap Student version of XP. I have several friends at Polytech who get it either real cheap or free but getting them to get me a key prob also isn't right. Is there a way for me to get a Student version of XP Pro via MS or some other source? Like is there a cheaper version of it for students available?

Thanks!

Matt

You can get Student versions from many retail stores. Just visit Dick Smith and ask for it for example.

If you are tertiary student there's an option for free software even.

or if what you are studing is slightly related to computers you might be able to get free software through MSDNAA.

Check this list for schools which have access: http://www.msdnaa.net/search/SchoolSearchIntl.aspx

I was entitled to free copies of XP Pro and Vista business for studing comp sci @ canterbury. Art & accounting students seem to have a different login so I'm not sure what they are entitled to

Oh wow, this makes me want to cry. I just checked out the above site, free copies of Vista business (Just what I'm after).

I am a student, now studying accounting, and just finished computer certs. I graduated from Canterbury this year. My "school" does not appear on the list. Anyway - why would various places offer free copies of Vista Business, etc?

Have a look at Student Select products on http://www.lapshop.co.nz/
Unlike MSDNAA obtained products, you are free to do what you like with MS Student Select software once you finish studying, unlike MSDNAA which is only licenced for course work.
As a SIM student at VUW I have access to alot of software via MSDNAA including (but not limited to):
Windows Server
MSSQL ServerVisual StudioWindows XP Pro
Windows VistaOffice AccessOffice VisioOffice Project

I don't believe my luck! My current course provider is not on the list.

Aoraki (where I was 2006/2007, and 2008 (but I withdrew this year after 4/6 weeks) is on the list but I never knew about the fact I could have bought Vista Business off them then, or I would have. (I still want to cry).

I am going to be able to get it anywhere at student rate?

The other thing is their website says "If you are a current tertiary student taking at least one course for credit the Student Select program allows you to purchase licenses and media for installation on your personal computer. Certain restrictions apply."

This is a bit vague and I have emailled them, but guess I wont get reply until monday. I mean is it saying if I study 1 module (18 needed for whole Diploma) that makes me "part time" and I get ID card, and thus then qualify for it?

I got an email from our MSDNAA rep which states that we are able to use the products however we wish for as long as we wish, after we have finished studying.

This is true however you will no longer be able to access new keys from this site - However I am pretty sure everything will still activate fine :D

Awesome! Hey do you know if SIM plans to put the 2008 versions of things up? Like SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 etc.
And Exchange?
