Whoa! With the exception of Sempron, this is hardly a home server anymore is it? What do you do with 9 drives?!

Interesting, the HP you mentioned goes for $630 US on Amazon... That's not a bad deal at all...


Well I guess that's true, It does handle the backups for a website and graphic designs business, for any small business (8 or less computers) It kicks the "Sorry. Your post was not accepted due to bad words in it" off any other available options in both price and features. It is also handling remote access and soon it will also be an SFTP server.

other then that we just use it to "store stuff"

I built one from scratch using a $120 mobo from PB Tech, an Intel E2180 for the CPU and a couple of gigs of ram.

I have an assortment of sata drives in the box now heading towards 2TB.

Never had any probs, enjoyed the build process and the system has saved my bacon a few times since go-live.

I'd recommend you build one scratch.

This is pretty much the same path i went, including similar parts and it has worked great, building one yourself is much more effective in my opinion

Right. The bottom line, as I see it, is that if I can get a REAL bargain from one of the server-in-a-box manufacturers, I will go for it, but if I can't, then a DIY is the preferred option.
