I've just ended up in a situation where a wired connection to a router is not an option. I did not expect it to happen when I bought my brand new Acer Easystore, but now that I am in that situation, I need another way to connect the server.
Now, if I plug a USB Wifi dongle into my WHS, what's going to happen?

Yip, the most basic TP-Link dongle I could find - worked like a charm.

It should work ok but it's pretty strongly reccommended against. The backup process can be a little finicky and you don't really want the first backup (which images the whole disk) to run over WiFi... any particular reason you can't sit the server with the router? It does run headless after all and can be tucked under a counter or God forbid in a cupboard (although you'll have heat issues potentially with it in a cupboard obviously)

To make the story short: the modem is in the lounge, the WHS is in the study.

The idea originally was to rewire the house to move the modem and the future server to a shelf hidden away in the laundry or the study. The rewiring project had to wait, and in the mean time I had the opportunity to get an Easystore server at a price I couldn't turn down. The misus was not really appreciative of another strange box in the lounge, so the newly bought WHS had to be moved to the study and Wified to the modem in the lounge.

Fair enough - makes good sense. You might want to run your first backups with it cable connected then if possible (force a manual backup) - especially if the logs show failed backup attempts.
