Hi guys,

I have been helping someone setting up their desktop that they purchased off trade me. While doing Windows Updates, getting errors, trying to fix the arisen problem (by updating .NET framework) and getting more errors, somewhere along the way I came across a message that said that the OS installed was Windows 7 Ultimate pre-release. That is simply the version after all the BETA versions of an OS, and a final review of the OS before a RTM release, right?

Thanks,
Stevie

Are you sure it was Pre Release not Release Candidate?

To find out go to my Computer then System Properties and it should tell you.

If it is a pre release version of windows it would of have had to been "Cracked" as they all expired well before now. If this is the case this is why you aren't receiving windows updates as they stopped patching the pre release versions when the RTM comes out.

Haha. Thanks for that. Yes, I'm pretty sure the message was pre-release needing to be upgraded to a RTM (or whatnot) version in order to do some installation of something.

Windows Update installed everything that showed up when I made it check for updates, except for IE 9.

However, because this is a desktop that I didn't purchase, and isn't in our house, I have no time for concerns over it. I will let the lady who I'm helping know what you've told me. I already told her this morning that it seems to be a pre-release and not a finalised release of Windows 7 Ultimate. Had she come to me prior to buying it, and investigating things further if the description raised questions, then I would have advised against getting it.

If, in fact, in the description it described the PC as having "Windows 7 Ultimate installed" and no more, I'm not sure whether that would imply a version purchased, and not a beta or pre release.

I'll find that out later, though.

Checking the Properties of My Computer, the OS was said to be Windows 7 Ultimate. However, if it were an official OEM (or upgrade), then I shouldn't have been encountering the problems I had (especially that message about upgrading from pre release).

In the end the lady purchased an OEM of Windows 7 Home Premium, and everything has been fine. No problems installing software; using Windows Update. I did a disk clean up and cleaned up C:\ after the install, including the folder of previous Windows installations.
