OK - I've wasted several hours today trying to sort this out - It's now time to throw it out there...

We've got a HP dc7800p SFF. It fell over and died and has had a Windows reinstall. The dual monitor setup now will not work. The machine recognises that two monitors are connected, but one monitor does not receive a video signal.

Setup:

It's a run of the mill PC running Windows 7 Pro (32bit). The video card in question is a Nvidia GEForce and I've tried it with the default windows drivers - plus I have been to the Nvidia site and downloaded the most recent driver too. Plugged into the video card is a HP DVI Y Cable DMS-59 to Dual VGA Connector.

Device Manager shows a fully functioning Video card and monitors - but also listed in there is a PCI Serial Port & PCI Simple Comms Controller without drivers...

Making me crazy!

Have you gone into the screen resolution menu and made sure the desktop is set to display on the second monitor?

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\Screen Resolution (Adjust Resolution)

You may need to select to extend the desktop onto the second monitor under one of the drop down menus.

OK - I've been and had a closer look at this...

When two monitors are connected - port 1 does not display any image regardless of the settings. If I disconnect the monitor from port 1, the one connected to port 2 works as the primary display. If I disconnect port 2, then I can't see anything.

The monitor reports no signal... Our in-house IT people want to buy a new video card - Surely it is something to do with the two PCI devices that have no drivers.

F10 on startup, make sure onboard PCI video device is turned off (if it is a dual head card and has its own GPU that is).

HP/Compaq are renound for picking onboard PCI video over cards. If the card is infact fine you should see the bIOS screen on both at a default 800x600 or so res during startup before it hits the driver init stage either way.

Chances are, now the onboard port is active as the second monitor and you need to tell it to use the card (port 2/3) instead.

Those 2 PCI devices missing drivers will be a red hearing. I take it you did not use the HP restore CD with the drivers injection that then asks for an OS. You can try HP SoftPaq Downloader to fill in the gaps, but doubt they are related (usually the IDE/Intel controller misreporting)

No worries Dave, was a rogue duplicate screen, I.E. widows thought there were 3 screens, so disconnected screen "2" and did extend desktop to screen "3".
