I am setting up a Linux server and need a simple IMAP server for a local network. Has anybody got any suggestions? I'm looking for something that is easy to set up if possible.

Devices: Samsung Captivate (AT&T Galaxy S) and HTC One on Telecom. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

Clarkconnect is fully configured and ready to go. Its a whole distribution, and I thoroughly reccomend it. Runs well in a VM if necessary too.

Lots of features, but could set up as an IMAP server in a matter of minutes.

I'm looking at Ubuntu Server which has Samba and a mail server already installed. Would CC be any better/easier to use?

Not 'better' if you just want plain IMAP. They will do the same core job.

Managing users and the mail server WILL be easier on Clarkconnect. Its also a great fileserver, web server (intranet and/or internet) plus HEAPS more.

I really reccommend trying it.

Its CentOS underneath, so can still do normal Linuxy Servery stuff too.

Dovecot is a fairly simple to use IMAP server.  Works with Maildir and MBOX files, and the default config in Ubuntu is fairly good and requires only minimal tweaking.

I run Dovecot on two hosts and have been fairly maintenance free.

Postfix/Dovecot/IMAP. on my server for over a year. No problems, and no major hacks. Really depends on your LAN.

I'm using postfix/cyrus imap on debian for my setup, and hosting mail for a few people (family) as well.

Works really well, and is robust..  Takes about 10 minutes to go from clean box to email server with only a couple of config changes...

I even took some documentation notes if you're interested I can post them (once I've found them in my rather messy wiki...)

Cheers.
