trig42: It will be OK, getting a diamond ring from a manufacturing jeweller will cost a lot more than $1500. If you had paid full price, you would be right to feel ripped off, but if an independant valuer has valued it at over $2000, you got a good deal.

Congratulations on the upcoming event, don't let this taint it - it will be great.

I agree with the above.  It doesnt sound like you got riped off.  I understand the frustration of their grading system not meeting the independent grading.  I think you have a fair case for some kind of compensation.  How about a store credit (you only wanted $100) for you to use on the wedding rings??

If you had a small budget then you have to give a little in some or all of the gradings.  Clarity to me is not the most important issue (as long as it is above the naked eye range), it would be the cut.  The better the cut the more it sparkles.  Also grading a diamond under .5 of a carat is not recommended (due to the diamond size) so if it is less than .5 you will likely have big variances in the grade.  If you gave it to 5 different valuers at that size you could get quite different valuations.

Cheers guys.

It's .45, and the clarity came back at I3... So no doubt ill be able to see the inclusion when I go down this avo. The colour was good though.

I think a good compromise is that I get refunded/store credited half the price difference between the RRP and the independent valuation.

Not if you bought it for under the valuation? I guess your point is that RRP should have been at the valuation and you would have paid half that price. Give it a go I guess, but it's no different to Briscoes 50% off RRP sales when no one sells the things at that RRP so the "real" discount isn't 50% at all.

"I guess your point is that RRP should have been at the valuation and you would have paid half that price"

Exactly.

In the end it worked out well. The clarity and colour were actually better than I thought (SI2/I1 for clarity and something like 3 or 4 for color). The cut wasn't as great but not too fussed as only a trained eye would notice that.

In the end they gave what I asked for which was a $100 store credit, which was about half the difference between the valuation and the RRP. So whilst I wouldn't say I was happy with the whole experience, I'm glad it's over with and I have a ring that I'm pleased with.
