Interesting article

Comparing the Lifestyles of Homosexual Couples to Married Couples

"Married and Gay Couples Not All that Different," proclaimed the headline of a news article portraying homosexual households as remarkably similar to married couples. "We're the couple next door," claimed one partnered homosexual. "We have a dog and a cat. I drive a Volvo. I'm boring."[1] Such down-home portrayals of homosexual couples are meant to provoke the question: Since gay couples really differ only in that both partners are of the same sex, what rational basis exists for denying them full marriage rights?

Are homosexual households, as the article suggests, simply another variant of human relationships that should be considered, along with marriage, as "part of mainstream American society"?

On the contrary, the evidence indicates that "committed" homosexual relationships are radically different from married couples in several key respects:

·  relationship duration

·  monogamy vs. promiscuity

·  relationship commitment

·  number of children being raised

·  health risks

·  rates of intimate partner violence

Offense can never be given, only taken ...

So what you'er saying is that are many types of homosexual couples, some are dysfunctional and people with an agenda to push will use this as 'evidence' that homosexual couples are somehow 'different' meaning inferior?

Wow, that's news.

Would it make it any different if the 'homosexual' was replaced with 'maori', 'Auckland' or 'ruby watching'?

Nope didn't think so.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

So yes I see gay relationships as unnatural. Its got nothing to do with the way I was brought up, or my religion. Maybe its just that part of me that shudders when I see two guys together, makes me ill. (Sorry if that offends, but its how I feel) And I know that many heterosexual men feel the same. Allowing gay marriage is not going to solve the problem about society not accepting it.  Many people including myself will never accept it.

Just my view. Go on shoot me down ...

If it happens in Nature, it's natural. Try using a different word.

Just because there are incidences of it happening does not make it natural. If it was natural, in this context you are implying that 'natural' means normal. It can not be 'natural' if the act does not have contribute to furthering the genetics of the species.

There are plenty of various sex acts that aren't natural then! Including using contraception!

Yes - that's right and I include homosexuality as one of them.

So is your partner pregnant? Did you use contraception? Because I think you're being a bit hypocritical if used protection or shes on the pill. Just sayin

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make? Is it that all sexual relations must produce offspring? I admit sex is for pleasure, I have enough children but my desire is to have sex with a woman. I am still capable of producing offspring of course but I have four already. I can state categorically and without any doubt that this is not possible in same sex relations.

So, you're saying that committed homosexual relationships are better than straight ones because of all the reasons you listed. Great!

There's a big difference between not agreeing with someone's lifestyle and hating them. I have gay members in my extended family. I love them just the same as all my family but that does not mean I understand or agree with their choice - or as argued, their natural tendencies.

Yeah man, totally agree.

My own mother eats hard boiled eggs, yuck yuck yucky. They are the most disgusting things a human can put in their mouth Wink. I have told her time and time again that hard boiled eggs are gross and also a waste of eggs which can be cooked in many interesting and delicious was but she just won't listen and refuses to see the light.

Still I love her all the same, what do you do, eh?

That everyone is different, and we should respect that.

At the end of the day no one is being forced to turn gay or adopt a different lifestyle. What is being asked is to let others who want to do it to be able to do it without prejudice.

So as long as the risk of having children is there, you are allowed to have sex for pleasure? What if you've had children, and then embark on a gay relationship purely for the sexual pleasure? That would put them more-or-less in your position - have had kids, are having sex for pleasure, only without that slight risk of an additional accidental child.

That freedom and tolerance go beyond the subject of what right is being denied to whom.

Today it is the right of gay people to marry tomorrow it could be the right of religious people to worship in public, the day after whether you can eat hard boiled eggs or not.

We stand up for freedom and tolerating others who we don't agree with, not specific rights.

Taking an issue out of a specific context is widely recognised as a way to see it from a different perspective, often not as emotionally charged.

Actually, there's a lot of fascinating research around this area.

Live mice created from two eggs (no sperm involved) http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/04/0421_040421_whoneedsmales.html

Human parthenogenesis (self-dividing egg with somatic genetic material) - http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/story.asp?storyCode=198490&sectioncode=26

Eggs derived from male embryonic stem cells http://www.orly.com.au/smh%5B1%5D.front%20page.pdf

Synthetic sperm derived from embryonic stem cells (note you could do this with anybody's stem cells, including women) http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/80beats/2011/08/08/worldwide-first-stem-cells-turned-into-sperm-turned-into-living-animals/

Artificial uteruses (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2002/feb/10/medicalscience.research) are also in heavy development (http://www.popsci.com/scitech/article/2005-08/artificial-wombs?single-page-view=true)

All of these technologies are being developed as a treatment for severe infertility (e.g. where the male doesn't produce sperm at all) but could equally be applied to gay and lesbian couples wanting to have biological children.

Hooray for science!
