Mark:
I've always wanted to start my own church/religion ... for purely humanitarian reasons of course, never to profit from the gullible ...

anyone want to join ?  Just 10% of you salary annually for the rest of your life to me the church and your soul will be kept safe in a jar so you can go off sinning with risk of tarnishing it.

Disclaimers.
1)  The jar may or may not protect your soul
2)  Your soul may or may not be possible to extract and put in jar
3)  Only 1 jar so souls may mix, soul returned may or may not be your original

Lol, can I be the God of that religion, I promise to be good.

Of course!  Why settle for one god ?  Lets have loads!  Far more fun!
And of course being a supreme entity "good" is optional.
Being first god in line you get to choose what you'd like to be god of ... "God of Marmite" ?  "God of Jelly Beans" ?  The possibilities are endless!

Additional disclaimer:

True Christians would not knock down homosexuals: Do not hate the sinner but hate sin. The homosexual in Christians eyes is a sinner just like a murderer or thief etc.,. But don't hate them because they're sinners because we all sin even Christians sin.. Its Sin we must hate for it is the pathway that can lead all men to permanent death. Treat all men equal that means homosexuals too. But do not live their ways, or envy their lifestyles and do not refuse to help them if they ask, for we are all Gods children.

Your welcome. :)

Actually, no where in bible actually say homosexual is a sin, in fact no mention of homosexual specifically at all.

chiefie: Actually, no where in bible actually say homosexual is a sin, in fact no mention of homosexual specifically at all.

Anything that is against Gods laws is a sin,

In fact its mention many times in the bible:  Read Timothy, read Leviticus, Corinthians.

Leviticus 20:13
“If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense.
New International Version (NIV)
‘If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

Of course we don't put homosexuals to death some religeons still do though in some parts of the world, Jesus came to change all that, instead of sacrificing animals to pure mans sins like the jews would do, Jesus took the blame & died for mans sins (on the cross) so the man that sins can be forgiven for his sins. This is why the Jews of the old testament even today do not believe in Jesus is the son because Jesus changes many of the old testaments beliefs and they still stick to the old ways. Judaism.

Jesus taught to treat all men how you would want to be treated.

Leviticus 18:22
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination

Anyway the homosexual has nothing to fear with the Christians, there is another religion out there that preaches far worse hatred against homosexuals that if a gay man were to parade up ther street they would be murdered on the spot.

KevinL:
pageweon: well Id love to give my two cents here, personaly I am all for equal marriage, every couple deserves the same rights. however I can understand that some religious folks would take offense, after all marriage is itself a religious institution.

maybe a nice compromise would be to make all "marriages" civil unions with equal legal rights and make weddings a purely religious ceremony

Part of the trouble is many countries overseas don't recognise civil unions (even if between a man and a woman).  You could potentially make civil unions and marriage completely identical in the eyes of the law (and hence allow civil union partners to adopt) - but you probably still would have issues with overseas recognition. Until they are both one and the same, civil unions will always be the lesser of the two in terms of benefits and recognition.

I don't see how this will change at all. If a particular country does not have homosexual marriage, then surely they would not recognise a marriage between a same-sex couple performed in another country.
France does not even recognise any marriages from Tanzania, for example.

Ohoh, religion.

Sin: An immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law.

Divine law as in a religious law.

Since i'm an atheist, there's no such thing as Sin since there is no such thing as divine law, therefore not a valid reason to keep equal marriage illegal.

Actually I think it is Leviticus 18:22 ( or thereabouts). It only speaks of sex between men though, so apparently leaves the door wide open to sex between women. Make of that what you will.

Disclaimer: the quoted section of the bible may or may not have been interpreted by several individuals/groups at the behest of the church down the centuries *may not actually reflect the will or intention of *the* monotheistic God at all*, if such an entity exists at all).

I believe that passage can be interpreted several ways, one of such meaning that you shouldn't have sex with "prostitutes" in the churches of Baal.

Jaxson: I used to think that the term Marriage had been secured already, probably mentally thinking church/state etc had/owned it. Therefore they had first call on what exactly constituted a marriage. Meaning then, if they had defined it as being between a man and a hot lady, then you were simply out of luck if you didn't fit that definition.

However, now I'm of the opinion that the churches can't claim the term Marriage as their own. Sort of like you're not allowed to copyright a term that's too generic. What's lead me to this way of thinking is pretty simply: I (a man) am Married, (to a hot woman), but I'm not religious in any way. So I don't consider my marriage (ceremony was not religious and was not held in a church) to be linked to religion, and therefore who are churches to define the meaning of the term?

Actually, they probably can. The word comes from the 14th century, Old English. While etymologists argue that it has roots back to 12th century Old French (meaning, "exchange of dowry") and 11th century Latin, these were all terms used by the Roman Catholic church. The concept of marriage has probably been around as long as people have been getting together.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where the term came from, its how it is viewed now that is important. For some people, its viewed as a sacrament between two people (depending on their religious beliefs) and for others its a legal status only. How its enacted and what it really means is always up to cultural interpretation.

Whether NZ is culturally-evolved enough to accept gay marriage comes down to the decision of a small group of elected politicians.

I don't see it having any real influence on the NZ population or social functionality of the country, why should it be opposed? 50 Shades of Grey, however, should prompt the construction of a "Men's Refuge".. but I won't go into that..
