KiwiNZ: I need a Ramp for my home however due to the interesting and unique way things are funded for disabilities in New Zealand I don't qualify for help. to qualify I need to be disabled to the point where I could not use the Ramp.

My condition is such that due to fusion of the vertebra I am unable to look down when I try to walk up and down steps and cannot see where I am stepping, because of this I fall off the steps a lot. When I am too sore and need to use my wheelchair like now, I am unable to get out of the home myself.
My spine is a at a very high risk of fracture due to the fusion and a simple trip in the steps could fracture my spine leaving me paralysed .

So in order to prevent becoming paralysed I need to be permanently wheelchair bound, a catch 22 and something that will be self professing as I will eventually fall and seriously damage my spine. If this occurs the cost to the Government in medical bills will far exceed the cost of assisting with a ramp, however our interesting health and disabilities assistance does not consider that.

So I have options, stay indoors or go out when I can and risk serious injury. I think I see a rock and a very hard place, the hard place being the concrete at the bottom of our steps.

when did you get discharged from hospital? as far as i know the hospital occupational therapists can arrange this along with the social worker ...

or get your GP to refer you to the relevant rehab unit for assessment of something and then pull your way to get the OT/SW involved

I can only second suggestion of going through Rotary, Lyons or other community groups like that. Church groups (if you're part of a church) have often been keen to help with these kind of things.

While fighting ACC or other government department may get you somewhere, it is not likely to have a prompt solution.

I doubt an MP has any control over changing that.

I find it very hard to ask for help, call it stupid pride. But my confidence has taken as big a blow as my physical
capabilities.

The system just gets you down, the battle to get seen in the health system, the battle to get approval for medication, it has taken 3 years just to get a handrail installed.

There is only so much fight one has.

Ultimately whether you find it hard or not, you don't have the resources on your own to solve this problem right now, you will require some outside help. In your particular situation the adage pride cometh before a fall is potentially very true, and so I would encourage you to look at the options offered and see if any of them could help you out. If you don't want to rely on a "hand out", what about a family loan ?

Yes, I can understand having only so much fight. Definitely relate to that.

However, you do not have a choice. Unless you like the idea of taking a tumble and being paralysed...

You may find it difficult asking for help - but you did by posting here. Now take the next step. We cannot do it for you. But lots of people are offering good ideas. You have moral support here.

Hang in there - it *will* get better.

I want to sincerely thank all those who have shown great support and offered very good advice.
It really is greatly appreciated and I am sorry if I was coming across as ungrateful. Please put that down to pain and pain medication.

Ah now you mentioned the key word . .. Get your gp to refer you to a chronic pain rehab facility unit they also possibly have resources to do these things for you ... They definitely have the while gang there ot sw and anything you can think of ... But state your case early on that you want the ramp otherwise they have to guess and you don't get what you were there for

Should be the same all over the country ... Rehab units' main aim is to discharge people into independence hence once you are in they will install anything to get you home and independant ...
