Must be difficult / frustrating to run such a business with these sorts of laws. I used to deliver papers when I was a kid, on a bike that was probably overloaded and unsafe , and I never heard of any injury problems from that.

In this case I strongly suspect it is a well worn excuse on the part of the herald rather than anything which specifically prevents this kind of delivery.

It's all based around the lowest common denominator. "Because one dog bit a kid all bichon frise must be microchipped". "Johnny fell off his bike so no-one is allowed bikes anymore". I was listening to Steve Gurney on the radio the other day. Adventure sports are becoming extinct due to the hoops organizers have to jump through to make sure contestants don't scratched by gorse... timmmay: NZ post letterbox specifications. If you don't meet them, you can't really complain. I don't think they have to deliver to letterboxes set up wrong. Actually you can complain as their specifications are quite open to interpretation

Running up Marshall St with a bag of $1.00 coins on a dark winter night - now that's a health & safety risk!

They seem to have trundlers these days, and many are delivered by middle aged or elderly people. I doubt they would do it for the low pay, so probably do it for the exercise and to get out of the house.

That's what I thought, but as another poster mentioned the same excuse was used by Dom Post too. Still don't believe that such a rule is actually practical, well at least in the world I live in.

Yeah but I think the days of paper's being delivered by the actual company that prints them are well gone, The delivery will have been contracted out to another organisation(s) (that may actually contract for both newspaper companies across the whole country....)

I don't own the land in front of my house, so I didn't want to put a letterbox there then get told later I had to move it. To get to my neighbours letterbox you walk down the semi-steep driveway, down the path, into the entrance way to the property, it's on the side there. Must be a pain in the butt for a postie. I'd prefer scrapping letter boxes on roadsides and having slots in the front door like the UK. Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat New Zealand as a Solution Architect for all things Linux, Virtual and of course Cloud. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

It works like this: The organisation, in this case the Herald, sets up a rule they know won't be followed as it is impossible to follow the rule and get the job done in the real world. However, in the small amount of instances where someone doesn't follow the rule and something goes wrong then the organisation is covered and the individual is hanged because they were not following the rule. It isn't about safety it is about the organisation, which writes the rules, being able to say: Well, we are not liable because they didn't follow the rule. Yeah, it's still stupid. Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?
