Is it just me or does everyone else think this is ridiculous?

it's very impressive how ancient maori had 4G technology long before the europeans showed up and hundreds of years before the rest of the world figured out how to do it.

I think it's a big bullshit business to make money. Rights over something that was invented "now"?

Its another way for maori to get money without working for it.

The government has been rather accommodating of such silliness so why not?

The ridiculousness is on the governments behalf. You can't blame the maori for trying.

The last time this happened with the 3G spectrum we got 2Degrees entirely as a result of that.

The competition has been welcome and has made a significant difference.

The result was actually quite good.

I know it's not really very politically correct, but sometimes I am of the opinion all Pakeha's should pack up and leave NZ and leave the Maoris to the entire country exactly as it is.

It never feels like it will end!

I don't see the issue, the rights remain in New Zealand ownership.

It seems anytime Maori smell money they invoke the Treaty of Waitangi and claim they have "rights".

Funny though, I can't imagine anyone using RF devices in 1840.  Smile

KiwiNZ: I don't see the issue, the rights remain in New Zealand ownership.

The issue is that NZ taxpayers will have to fork out millions of dollars to buy the "rights" to the RF spectrum off Maori.

I understand the issues the Treaty addresses but I fail to see how it can be used to claim rights to a technology that never even existed in 1840.

It's just pure greed.

how can "Maori" or any other "race" claim rights to a man made resource?

this may get moderated but....

I'd return the coutry to the 1840's condition...

there was no need for Maori to be involved.  If the government wanted a third player they could have just given/sold the rights direct to NZcommunications (who later because 2Degrees).  Having Maori just has an unnecessary middle man.

Unintended consequence. The government gave the rights to the Iwi to buy the spectrum at a discounted price. Econet worked a deal with that group.
