Litespeed: I'm in Wellington and I cycle commute from Tawa into the CBD most days.

I've just started cycle commuting again - same suburbs as you :-)

For years I used to ride a racing bike for this but something's a little stuffed and I haven't got time to figure out what it is and fix it. So, I'm relegated to a mountain bike. I'm finding on average it's taking me ~40 mins to the CBD and ~45 mins back home - via Ngauranga both ways.

Being an ex-racer I'm really enjoying the exercise and am saving a heap in vehicle costs at the same time. I'm one of the fortunates who has never been knocked down by a motor vehicle although I've had a number of close calls when cars have cut across my path at intersections, including a car which turned into me and struck my back wheel because the driver "didn't see" me.

It takes me about 45-50 into town and 50-5 coming home again.  Managed to clock up 2500km so this year :-)

Best part of the ride is whizzing down the cycle-path past all the poor buggers waiting for the train.  If you are on an MTB, try the Wakely Rd detour.  Makes a nice off-road alternative to bombing down the gorge.

Dratstab - check out a set of Specialized Fatboys for your MTB. Super slick, good puncture protection, you can pump 'em up good and hard. Not quite the same as a road bike, but gets your MTB half way there.

I ride a road bike in the weekends (well, not so often these days since the Chch earthquakes buggered up the roads and hills), but find a MTB a much safer option for commuting as it's easier to jump curbs etc. if evasive action is required to avoid the blind driving tin cans.

I motorcycle, 650cc. Mainly motorway. Very very rarely I scoot up the inside if the lane is long and stopped, prefer to follow traffic. Take car if really bad weather

Advantages:
Enjoyable
Park 2 metres from work door
Cheaper in fuel

Disadvantages
High crosswinds
Rain, my jacket now seeps water, leggings are good but bulky
Rego. $528 pa

Safety: I ride safe, keep distance, watch others, I feel safe.

I walk 10 seconds and I'm at work. The best place to work, at home. I used to ride a scooter, but it's not safe, had some minor accidents where some car drivers didn't see me.

Childrens push cars can certainly be hazardous when scooting down a hallway Wink

I used to drive out from Titirangi, then switched to bus, now buses take sooo much longer than they used to so I've switched to motorcycle (down to a 20 to 25minute commute from 45mins to an1hr)

I only try to filter if all the lanes of traffic are stationary, if they are moving I tend slot in and stay in the queue, if they are going above 30 or 40kph then I definetly stay in the queue, not keen on the bikers who zoom inbetween when everyone is doing 80+, seems to be pushing your luck!

I'm also an ATGATT rider.

Motorbike normally, 32km eachway so petrol costs are cheaper. Travel from Mairehau chch to just north of Rangiora so low traffic open road speeds most of the way (traffic jams in the other direction).
Of course rain/snow etc and I normally take the car.
