I did not get a say in the matter, they just wrote to say that they have switched me automatically.

I guess that I need to switch to another supplier.

Why are they allowed to do this?

Looking at my bills over the last 7 months, I will be paying $5-$8 a month more for my electricity.

I would say it's in the terms and conditions

I am not with Mercury, but some companies have differing price structures depending on your usage, our company has a 12 monthly check-up to make sure we are on the best plan, admittedly it advises us if it thinks we should be on a different plan (cheaper) and we can choose to change or not.

On the face of it the charges may appear higher, but have a close look at the rental and line rates per Kw, perhaps they have actually switched you to something that may be overall cheaper?

Typically higher rental = low unit prices and vice versa.

Mercury has special low user plans for low users, once you exceed the limit regularly you can't stay on them.

This is probably what happened.

No, quite the opposite. I am on the standard plan and they are moving me to the low use plan. That is despite the fact that my monthly consumption is substantially above that at which the low use plan is a saving and also despite the fact the year-on-year, my monthly consumption is increasing considerably.

Just like most companies they have the right to adjust pricing to whatever they want to

of course, if they do, they have to give you appropriate notice and you have the right to switch suppliers.

Sounds like a mistake, have you tried contacting them?
