BTR: Stoke, oh god now, its the only beer I have given away because it was so bad. I have started brewing my own, brewed a nice Mexican Cerveza the other week came out nicely at 5.75% Otherwise being from the south island I drink Speights.

But back to the OP I agree its a shame that these bigger companies are having to buy smaller craft brewers out because they can't make there own beer good.

Ha ha, I was taking you seriously there for a minute until the Speights bit :)

Whats wrong with Speights? puts hairs on your chest unless your a yuppy and prefer to drink Heineken and wax your chest Tongue Out

I find Speights is good if I ever have constipation. It cleans you out pretty damn quick.

Oh you were serious. Sorry just got confused between the bit where you said you like Speights and then the bit where you said bigger companies can't make their own beer good.

JimmyH:

I live in Wellington so finding craft beer isn't really a problem, the craft beer section of New World Metro has to be seen to be believed and craft beer bars are everywhere.

Since you are in wellington, try Hashigo Zake if you haven't already. They have a great range of uber-hoppy proper beers. Also, Little Beer Quarter is worth a visit.

Yeah, I really like it. Might give it another go this weekend.

There WAS an independent craft brewer down there that hosted tours too.

Emersons was the name

Not long ago I would have mourned the loss of Emerson's, but at least now craft brewing is well established and I suspect they'll hardly be missed.

For anyone in Chch looking for a decent pint or 3 check out Volstead in Riccarton. Well hidden, but worth the search. A very good range of Moa on tap, 5 "hand pull" craft beers that change as fast as the 20 litre casks run out, and a fridge full of exotic bottled beers. A worthy spot!

It is amazing that so many people are so worked up about this. But they don't seem to care that another NZ iconic company has just been sold offshore F&P, including all it's IP.
Beer is hardly rocket science, and there are heaps of craft beer makers around now. Infact I know someone who has recently setup their own beer making company and it has been quite successful for them.

Disagree, this was just about Emersons, nowhere does anyone say they don't care about F&P.

Two words: Fan Bois.

Emerson's being sold I think is just a continuation of the maturing of the market.

F&P being sold is different, the IP is the important bit and I have a hard time seeing it as Apple with the design at home and the low end manufacturing off shore.

Yeah, seems craft beer is the new black.

But from what I have heard, analysts expect to see the whole lot moved out of NZ including the design side, and it done in Europe instead, where the main market is going to be. That would also make sense, as why would you hvae people working on the otherside of the world from your main market. At least Emersons is going to continue how it was, at least they say it is. Trademe works in similar way, it was sold offshore, but the main owner had an offhands approach, and it has been very successful since, look at it's share price since it floated.

If F&P were world class they would be worth worrying about. Read the dishwasher thread - who in their right mind would by an F&P product these days? Yes, once they were something to be proud of, but those days are gone, and their sale is but the final nail...

Beer on the other hand, is significantly more important than white-ware! I can buy a German appliance that will last 20 years and I can effectively forget about it, but I buy beer somewhat more often and certainly get a LOT more enjoyment from it.
