Got a call from my bank to let me know a couple of my cards have been potentially compromised. Apparently a website i've used has been hacked and both visa and mastercard have notified all the banks.



They can't release what website it is, but it's obviously one that ive used two of my cards with. Haven't managed to figure it out yet.



Anyone else get a call from their bank? Just wondering if this is isolated or more widespread.

what?? so how the hell are you supposed to avoid that website in the future?

Nothing here (I'm with Westpac). I typically use PayPal if the site supports it since that doesn't involve releasing my card details to another party.

I agree, sounds like a phishing scam.  Ring the bank and check.  If you gave any additional information, get them to cancel your cards and send new ones.

ASB ring and say that to you. It's quite disconcerting as they come in from a private number. In the past, I've said give me a case number and I'll call the credit card centre myself (in these days of phishing).

Yep. If you got a call and they asked YOU to confirm your identity by giving them name, address and security codes... Phishing alert!

You should say "I will call the bank" and call the number on the card - don't call any number they give you either.

If you gave any information, cancel all cards.

Because visa and mastercard contact the website also as well as the banks.

Ah no. It was a voicemail this morning from an 04 number explaining the issue, with asking them to call kiwibanks 0800 number (and yes, it did match the one on their website). I would never give up my details to someone simply asking for it, and any time someone says call this number for an issue like this, I always cross reference the number to make sure its legit.

I'm still left wondering what site it is.... there's not that many services i've used both cards on i don't think. All are major websites as far as i can think of...

Hi, definitely sounds like a scam, we have had ours compromised before and Visa was very engaging and detailed what the website was and all the details relating to how and when.

I'd love to know then why kiwibanks fraud department which i contacted on their official 0800 number confirmed the voicemail, referenced it and issued me with two new replacement cards free of charge. Pretty impressive scam if they have managed to slam a banks 0800 number and make their own fake helpdesk, i'd have to hand it to them if they could pull that off.. At no point did i ever give over any of my card details either.

They said the website name they were not told of, or couldn't tell me, for risk of defamation but said to look for a site i've used both cards on.

Rings a bell with something that happened to me a while back, though iirc the bank sent me a letter. Wasn't very happy they wouldn't give me any details (I'd been using my card in Asia), but I think I had to use my card in a BNZ ATM to reset the security info on the card stripe before I could use the card again, or use it overseas in certain countries or something. (Can't remember the details so sorry for the vagueness.)

We're not saying they did it. As you didn't say anything before about you calling back people here thought it would be a nice gesture to perhaps help prevent a scam happening.

I woke one morning  to a text message from my bank saying, urgent call this number and quote this reference. i thought what ever, but called just to see what it was. the guy on the end asked for my reference number which I gave it to him and did ask me any further details. Turned out that my card had been used over night in some strange locations. Since I had only used my card with quickflix for the past few months he reckoned that’s were the hack had happen.

The different banks use different ways to inform there customers of dodgy card activity.

This is a classic phishing message. How do you know the number in the message was the bank number? Did you check on your card or statement to see if the number matched or just blindly trusted the SMS and called the number?

You see, this is paranoid in action. What if you call and instead of giving the ref number they actually asked you for the card number and PIN? Would still give this to them?

Both my Amex and my Visa got compromised 2 weeks ago, I got texts and emails from Westpac telling my they had blocked the cards and to ring the number on the card to talk to them.

All the support guy could tell me was that someone tried to use my Visa card in the states .. which they thought was odd (or followed a known pattern for fraud) so they blocked it straight away, the thiefy person got nothing.

You can't assume every text/email you get is a scam, the banks do have to contact you somehow! :-)  Just be sensible and contact the bank with a method of your choosing.
