Behodar: Well judging by Steve's post it appears that it won't work with my debit card anyway, which could partially explain lack of information :)

Edit: I'm with Westpac.

Westpac only offer NFC on Mastercards, not Visas.

Pay-wave seems dangerous to me. Someone could steal my card, clean my account and be out of town before I realised!

Fraud levels in Australia have reduced with both with chip+PIN and NFC.

Paywave offers the same liability guarantee as any other credit card payments so that's never going to happen.

The max limit is $80, which you would get refunded if it was indeed stolen.

I used Paywave (ASB Visa Debit) for the first time at BP the other day. So quick and easy. I just wish more retailers would hurry up and upgrade.

At least with a credit/debit card, of you don't have a pin, you're stuffed. Even if the 80 dollars is refundable...what about when the the thief makes six 80 dollar is?

As far as convenience goes...punching in a 4 digit code is not that bad considering the extra security it provides.

If the thief makes 6 x $80 purchases you're still coverec by your credit card liability cover.

The vast majority of fraud isn't carried at at bricks and mortar premises or ATM's where the extensive use of CCTV means you will be identified. It's carried out online or via terminals in another country. Your PIN doesn't offer any protection in either of these situations.

All Visa and Mastercards inc the Debit Visa from ANZ are now pay pass or pay wave enabled. Of course you need to have your existing card replaced to get it.

Kind of off the point of slow transactions, but any one have a good idea why ANZ Australia have limit set to $100AUD ($127NZD) or less for contactless transactions yet here its $80NZD?

You wouldn't be able to buy a round of drinks for NZ$80 in Aussie! Smile

Seen a few places deal with the slow chip cards in an interesting way, swipe it, then insert and remove the card and then swipe again. Result is a nice fast non chip transaction.

Will try that when I am next at a place with a self swipe terminal.

This is very true haha, just looking at my AUS ANZ visa debit card this morning and noticed the transaction limit was rather different, $127 vs $80 in the same currency.

Only works if the terminal can be convinced that the reason it couldn't read the card was due to a faulty chip or reader.  If it believes the chip and reader are fine, then chip+PIN is mandatory - it will just keep telling you to reinsert the card.

The worst terminals are the smartpay SP30's. If you don't enter a PIN with a chip card it'll simply default to signature, something I wasn't aware was actually permitted as it's an online transaction, not a EOV one.

Ah yes, I thought that myself when prompted "Press Enter for PIN Bypass" on a CHQ transaction at PB Tech today.  Was wondering if it would even work, but wasn't game enough to try it.  Possibly down to it being that the base card is a Mastercard?
