Call me a cynic but...

"New Zealand Post spokesman Michael Tull said there were no delays with parcels being processed once they arrived at the International Mail Centre near the Auckland Airport."

...one has to wonder if the time taken from arriving at Auckland Airport, until NZ Post gets around to loading up the truck and driving it to the International Mail Centre for sorting is non-trivial.

NzBeagle: I had this occur to me, but I think it was considered in NZ, once it was handed off at the International Processing site in the UK, as it said it was in NZ about the next day after it shipped, which didn't seem feasible.

In the past, I've had parcels from the UK delivered to my door two days after being shipped, so it is possible that a parcel arrived in NZ the next day (not usual, but its happened). I had a postcard I sent in Belgium delivered the next day once (still don't know how that happened!).

Had an interesting talk with Amazon.com. They are aware of issues with NZ deliveries and of the Herald article about Book Depository delays. Amazon claims that orders are reaching NZ within the normal & expected time-frame (within a week of dispatch) but that they are being delayed once arriving in NZ.

Given my experience of dealing directly with NZ customs and NZ Post over the parcel for which I started this thread, I believe Amazon.

feel sorry for the poor sorting people - bet they not going to get extra staff to help them with that back log.

That's fine, but do you know exactly who's to blame? The freight company, customs, NZ Post?

look like not nz post or airport but book not getting to nz at all

It looks as though something has broken down between inbound arrival and the transfer to the international parcels centre.

That said, one of my parcels has been at the parcel centre for a week now with no movement. I had a delivery this morning. One item was tracked and showed it had been sent out for delivery. I called NZ Post about the other (both from Amazon, both sent and arrived on the same day) and they checked with international parcels and confirmed it was still there in Auckland. 15 minutes later both parcels were delivered.

Update: As I started writing I've just heard that the phone coming from the UK is now MIA. C'est la vie - I am so over NZ Post and international parcels.

Elpie: According to the NZ Post staffer I spoke to there is only one customs officer working with them and she is only there a couple of days a week, for between 2-4 hours each time. She said customs was really short-staffed at the moment (have since learned that customs officers are away doing a boat people exercise).

Scheduling a large scale training exercise with Customs Staff for December must be one of the dumbest decisions ever.
