The bridge is partly closed for "annual maintenance" again.

The two northbound clip-on lanes are closed for resurfacing.

A year ago, the bridge was also partly closed for "annual maintenance' and it was also the two northbound clip-on lanes that were due for resurfacing.

Seems odd. Why do those lanes need annual resurfacing while the rest of the bridge seems to need nothing?

I have heard rumors that the designers of the bridge wouldn't set foot on it if you paid them. Not sure if it is true or not. I haven't heard of any major failures.

A quick google surfaces a lot of results regarding upgrades to prevent catastrophic failure. Again...Not sure how accurate this is.

Check out the NZTA website, perfectly plausable explaination there. 

This time of year it is easier for them to shut down the lanes. 

You will also note that quite often during the year the other lanes are closed overnight for surfacing work.

The way I read that is that the bridge is fine as it is, Trucks on clip on lanes do not help and anyone that wants to build anything extra onto the bridge is off their rocker.

According to TVNZ news, the clip-on lanes have a steel base and require a special synthetic seal. This is stripped off annually back to the bare steel and resurfaced.

No way, the Nipon Clipon's are doomed to fall into the sea at any moment. They are not even attached to the rest of the bridge, they just hang out there.

It is not seal they have to strip off, it is hot glue and silicon. They have to re-glue the clipons to the bridge periodically otherwise the self tapping screws would have too much load on them and fail. They did use good quality stainless self tappers though so at least they don't rust out so fast any more.

My understanding is that the northbound lanes require more maintenance because trucks are heavier travelling north. No really they are. They pick up from the ports, head north to deliver their load then come back empty.
