Topic # 113141 7-Jan-2013 22:07 Send private message

We were just sitting watching TV just before when the My Sky remote made a pop noise (it was on my wifes leg at the time and she felt the pop).

I opened the back hatch on the remote to find that one of the Sony AA-LR6 batteries had "exploded".

It looks like to bottom end (negative) had popped open (the ring off the bottom of this battery was no longer attached to the battery) and there were spots of acid over the of the remote control at the end where the battery "exploded".

I would have thought that these Sony Stamina Plus batteries should have been a decent quality, and shouldn't go doing something like this. They are still well before their shelf life - the packet they came from reads "Best Before 2016".

Has anyone else experienced this with AA batteries or their My Sky remote? (I'm note sure where the fault lies here, but more willing to lay it on the battery at the moment)

How long had it been in the remote?

Must have an internal short or something.  Probably just bad luck but maybe you should contact Sony, you might at least get a free pack sent to you or something :-)

It could be a problem with the remote, possible shorting the battery? That sort of thing can potentially happen if you try to charge the battery I had heard.

I'm most impressed that you were actually able to open the remote

Yeah - especially since I was being so darn careful to open it also after the "POP"!... It did take several attempts to open it.

The batteries had only been in the remote for a couple of months. And I would never, ever try to charge a normal battery - they ain't built for recharging. Smile

Sony appear to make a habit of producing exploding batteries. Seems that issue had now moved to their consumable batteries as well.

If that is indeed the case then that is a scary thought!

Are you sure the batteries were not inserted the wrong way around?

And both batteries were the same type? Not mixed with another brand?
