Some time ago I went to the Wellington Tawa branch and was told sub of the day was no longer available, is that at the discretion of each store or is it for the whole franchise?

I think that is everywhere in NZ.

Individual shops do seem to have the ability to do their own deals; one of the ads in the local shop says "Whakatane and Opotiki only" on it. But Sub of the Day is gone from here and has been for a while now.

All reference to "Sub of the Day" has disappeared from the Subway app as well, so I'd say the stores that still have it if any are the exception not the rule (it's also gone from every branch I've seen recently in the AKL West and AKL Hospital areas).

Sub of the day across the whole chain disappeared around a year or so ago.

Some stores in the Wgtn CBD still do a sub of the day deal with drink, but will only do this on the particular day, unlike the previous chain wide deal that applied any day of the week.

No longer eat it myself. Also cheaper and can be healthier just to make you own if you like that sort of thing.

The $7 foot-long special they had a few months back was pretty amazing though, a great lunch option.

The sub of the day was a loss leader. Unless you also got something else they were losing money - and I suspect most people didn't buy anything else.

Although on ingredients only, you would think that they were still making money on them as it is pretty cheap ingredients. But possibly after overheads  they weren't. But those overheads are pretty fixed, but if they are cannibalizing their existing sales, then that is a problem.

It wasn't a loss leader - it was actually just the normal price for all of those subs in the end. When they hiked the price they pulled the sub of the day deal.

Subway have huge margins..

I was a loss leader early on, but the SOTD price went up a couple of time, probably to small profit. I've seen the numbers and spoken with a franchise owner as part of a due diligence excise.

They still have $8(?) footlong subs don't they? Seems like decent value relative to most other fastfoods or cafe\sandwich bars, and healthier (at least you get a decent amount of salad)

I seem to remember the original (pre-price rises) 6inch SOTD deals were pretty amazing value though.

It's relativity healthy as long as you don't get all the sauces.

The last one I had was at the afternoon at the Hobbit movie premiere ... Courtenay Place.  they still had the 7 day menu up ... Then before Christmas, Tawa said it was discontinued ...  I had to ask as the sub of the day was off the menu.

The Courtenay Place, Manners St and Dixon St stores are (or were) all owned by the same person and had launched their own sub of the day deal available with a free drink.

The actual Sub of the day deal got pulled early on last year, but it's interesting that if you do a Google search for Sub of the Day that Subway are paying for a Google ad pointing to a non existant page.
