OK. So am I the only one that thinks things are going crazy in this country? http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/8194531/Trampoline-trip-raises-eyebrows Here are a bunch of people enjoying the outdoors and having a great time with an activity which has no impact on the environment and they are in trouble for it.... That is freaking ridiculous. Even the BBQ - in what way is that offensive? If they cleaned up after themselves, where's the issue?

Going against the grain here, but isn't the tramp group a bit silly doing this again knowing first hand the kerfuffle caused by the BBQ incident. To me their attempt to mitigate it (going to the plateau rather than peak) was a bit pathetic, I suspect they just enjoy the publicity/exposure

Why should they consult with the DOC about it? It's OK to take tents and other camping equipment of any sort. What exactly is different about taking a trampoline? Or a BBQ for that matter?

Either way it exposes how ridiculous the situation is all around us. It is the same Christian group that had a barbecue on top of Mt Taranaki a couple of years ago. They apologised for that. I don't see any suggestion that the act of trampolining itself caused offence. In this new occurrence it looks to me like offence was caused by not discussing the planned event after apologising and promising to be more sensitive the first time around. In this case the problem appears to be about the relationship with this group rather than the activity itself.

I never said that they broke any written rules. All I'm saying is that if a considerate person accidentally culturally offended a person/group by once, they might think twice before doing a similar thing again the next year. Its about respect, not the law

Do you really think that after discussing it with Iwi and DOC they would of been given permission? Yeah, right.

I'm not from the Taranaki iwi [edit: or Maori] so I have no idea. I have seen no suggestion that the activity itself was the problem. I don't think it is a question of permission here, it is a relationship thing.

If this group is prepared to go to all the trouble of taking a trampoline into Egmont National Park then let them have their completely harmless fun. The BBQ and couch they took to the summit of Mt Egmont was awesome, nobody was hurt, they didn't leave any rubbish (in fact they removed a whole bunch of other people's rubbish for good measure). Of course the Iwi get their nickers in a twist, it's what they do to make themselves think the rest of us care about their relevancy. DOC aren't much better either. In this case the group probably didn't even set foot on Mt Egmont anyway, they most likely came up via the Pouaki Ranges.
