In relation to the topic - the government (whoever it may be) increase fuel taxes all the time. The current government is increasing taxes by 9c per litre (ex GST) over the next 3 years.

According to the AA, for each litre of petrol, $61.129+GST goes to the government in excise tax. So it's not quite as bad as cigarettes or alcohol, but it's getting there.

I know it's not the cool car to get but last year I purchased a 2006 Prius, mostly because I enjoy geeky things. There's a lot of Prius 'hate' out there, but everyone that's been in my car so far has been really intrigued by it.

My average over the past 6 months has been 21km/l, and most of that is highway driving (the Prius is more economical in town than it is on the highway, the opposite to normal cars) including a trip around up from Christchurch around half the north island.

I say bring on the electric car. Driving through a town with the petrol engine off is fantastic, and a glimpse of the future. I would imagine in the future there'll be a tax on the number of km you drive though, to replace the current petrol tax.

there is already a tax on the KM you drive for electric and diesel cars.

It is the RUC, too often people forget to calculate this out per km when they do their gas milage.

The current rate is $48/1000km or $4.80/100km the equivelent of 2.3 litres of regular petrol 

If a diesel and petrol car got the same mileage then the diesel would cost $0.20/100km more to run.

Example 7.3l/100km = $15.33/100km petrol

             7.3l/100km = $15.53/100lm diesel

Assuming that all fuel costs the same you are infact paying more to the government.

And that will be where the electric car really shines: apart from consumables, 95% of the money you spend on your car goes into the care and feeding of the internal combustion engine: oil, coolant, filters, spark plugs, belts and so on. The electric car's motor has 1 moving part, which is a balanced rotor on bearings that will probably last for 20 years.

The transmission will almost certainly consist of a single fixed ratio gear, which sealed with grease will probably also last the whole life of the car without servicing. (The Tesla roadster's does for sure; I don't think there's a good reason for any other ones to be different).

The drive control electronics will probably require partial replacement in sooner than the life of the vehicle but I would expect the controller to protect the power electronics such that it never got into a situation where it would overload and blow them, so you're probably looking at years if not decades there too.

The batteries will be the only bits that need semi-regular replacement and apparently the Prius batteries are still getting good performance after more than 5 years. Obviously they're better than the average laptop battery.

Mechanics will be largely out of work. The chassis of the car will require the same amount of work it does now, of course; you still need suspension. But by comparison it's nothing. Replacing a CV joint doesn't take that long.

Yearly registration costs are also higher for diesel (especially utes!).
