cyril7: Yep as Dolsen says, the cycle path is too risky to ride, its falling apart and cannot be ridden safely by road cycles. Cyril I am surprised they could get away with not maintaining it properly with OSH rules and NZ standards. Could make an ok campbell live story.

If you pass 10 cycles going to work that means that you would be BEHIND 10 more cars if they were driving. The roads would be more clogged, the travel times would be slower. Maybe car drivers should pay cyclists out of gratitude for leaving their cars at home? As it is the wear on the roads of a bike, with the contact of about the size of a 50c piece is nothing, at all. dickytim: Not while you are cycling you don't. When you drive your car you are paying for your use of the road thru your petrol tax in a user pays scenario, when you ride a push bike you are not paying anything to the upkeep of the roads at all.

I'd be good to see a couple of pics of examples of how bad this cycle lane is (eg, broken glass, poor surface). Can anyone oblige?

we can argue back and forward with this and , as usual, goes in circles. Suffice that cyclists are legally able to cycle on the roads so would suggest that those that don't agree should get the law changed instead of putting forward examples of why cyclists shouldn't. They say cyclists are arrogant and some are but no different to some of the drivers around that feel their personal space is being invaded or the ' less that a minute' they are held up is taking away their rights. Frankly I think its just saying I'm more important than you so a very selfish attitude to say the least. Galaxy S3 Wanam 4.1.2

I've seem it from the train, and it doesn't look good last time I saw it. Don't think I have seen anyone use it. Dpn't know if it could cope with cyclists travelling from both directions either, as it looked quite narrow. Maybe someone could take a photo from the train coming home tonight.

Do you really believe I am so ignorant to not understand that!, in all my years of cycling I have had three accidents, none were my fault, none cost anyone but me, but all those miles will save the community another vehicle on the road at peak hour, and hopefully less medical bills as I age, and I think you would find thats by far the typical result. Cyril Haha, no I don't believe you to be ignorant, I was merely highlighting my point of view, and yes I am seperating different types of costs to the tax payer in my argument, but to the same as the government seperates petrol tax and RUC for roading, I recall a while ago the labour government was taken to task about not using the revenue from road taxes on roading, no doubt you will be seeing health benefits from cycling (so long as you don't have a major cycling accident that causes you to need long term care) as far as the cyclists being less cars on the road, yes and no, if there were thousands of more cars on the road, there would be more money to create bigger, better and more efficient roading. * I know that wouldn't happen but in theory it could* I know a little more than nothing but not much...

Frankly I think its just saying I'm more important than you so a very selfish attitude to say the least. for me the issue is not being held up for a few minutes, it is more when the cyclists are putting themselves and other road users at risk. In fact I drive on the motorway at around 80km/h so I am the last to complain about being delayed. I know a little more than nothing but not much...

The Netherlands is a great example of how to organise cycle lanes. In NZ cost will always be a restraining factor with our small population. Has anyone tried laying a claim for damage to property (i.e. your bike tyres) with the council? If many cars drove over glass receiving punctures and it had been lying on the roads for days without being swept perhaps the council would have a case to answer - then again perhaps not.

In fact I drive on the motorway at around 80km/h so I am the last to complain about being delayed. Surely this is a far greater outrage! We can all get up in arms about this instead? (joking (as long as you aren't in the right lane...))

To be honest I do have people who are trying to undertake getting angry that I am not travelling at 110km/h, but yes I always travel in the left lane, let on ramp traffic in ahead of me or allow them to merge like a zipper around me if they are not doing over 80km/h I know a little more than nothing but not much...

It can be done well in NZ. The new Southern motorway cycle extension in chch is awesome, a joy to cycle on and popular with runners walkers and cyclists. geek4me: The Netherlands is a great example of how to organise cycle lanes. My favourite I have seen is: road lanes, parking/or no parking, raised curb, recessed bicycle way (same level as road), raised curb and footpath. Melbourne had a bit of this from what I saw on a breif visit.

But the easiest way to get frustrated in traffic (life) is being stuck behind someone or something for an extended period of time and feeling disconsidered. From there the person's temperement can cause any range of actions/results (nothing/moderate/really bad), regardless of vehicle choice.
