Fabian: Watched Moneyball the other night, very good movie, there is always something about a true story that makes it a good movie to watch.

It is a good movie, but you do realise that Moneyball isnt released here at the cinema until the 9th February..

I watched happy feet 2 at the cinema the other day, i hadn't seen the first one but it didn't matter it was a decent enough movie. Some of the choices of music in the movie made me wonder though. My son enjoyed it too, he gave it a 9/10 but i wouldn't go that high myself Smile

How do you know we both didn't see it in the US?

freitasm: Tried watching The Trip. What a bad movie: 3/10 for being a bad version of Sideways.

Methinks you missed the point, it's a great film and not intended to be anything other than what it is...and certainly not a version of Sideways.

Perhaps not a version of Sideways, but still think it was bad enough to get 3/10...

Went to see Sherlock Holmes : Game of Shadows last night.

Great movie. Could easily be a stand-alone even though it's a sequel.

Action was ramped up a bit more; classic dialogue still there; weird relationship between Holmes and Watson still simmering away...

Great ending too...just didn;t see that coming...well...not like that, anyway.

All in all, I'd give this one a hearty 8/10

I watched the Dune miniseries (2000) last night. 6.5/10

I read the Dune books when I was in high school, and I would consider the first book, in particular, one of the best sci-fi novels I have ever read.  I've re-read them several times, and marvel at the complexity and depth of the themes it traverses.

After I read the books for the first time, I stumbled on the 1984 David Lynch-directed film, starring Kyle McLachlan and Sting.  It had some good points, but the cheesy acting and the dated effects (I watched it in the 90s) made me cringe, though I thought it did a reasonably good job of covering a complex book in a single movie.

So I was excited to see what SciFi channel could do with nearly 5 hours to play around with the source material.  However, it disappointingly doesn't seem to cover anything more than the Lynch film did, despite having more than twice the running time.  The acting and effects are still cheesy (though I admit I'm watching it 11 years after it first aired).  However, I think the thing that bugged me most were the little things that got left out.  I haven't read the books for a few years now, but I remember that the central character, Paul Atreides, is given his sietch name of Usul, but takes on the Fremen name Muad'Dib.  Not a major thing, but it bugged me all the way through wondering why they wouldn't include this small detail.  Also, I felt it glossed over some big themes - the religious/spiritual/mystical elements of the Bene Gesserit order, and their involvement in the affairs of Arrakis, are only ever really given a brief nod in the three-part series, while the momentum of the jihad that Paul Atreides instigates doesn't ever really threaten to drown him the way it does in the books.

In the end, while I don't think the miniseries butchered the books, it did feel as if it was a cheap, plastic knock-off of an epic story.  Where the 1984 movie was slightly surreal in its interpretation of the books, the 2000 miniseries didn't really capture the essence of the Dune story.  I've come to the conclusion that the books may be too complex and involved to film in an authentic way, unless perhaps Peter Jackson were to give it the LOTR treatment, but even then I wouldn't be too sure...

Was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo the Swedish version? Great movie. Make sure you watch - The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - 6/10

I watched this while I was in New Plymouth visiting family (sidenote - service at the Event Cinema on Devon Street was dreadful compared to my usual (Downtown Cinemas in PN).  No self-service machine; only two people at the combined ticket sales/candy bar, and agonising slow service to get through the large queue of people on the busy "cheap" Tuesday.  Plus, who bothers with assigned seating in cinemas these days?  Ridiculous! /rant).

It was okay, but a far cry from the hype leading up to the film.  I've enjoyed the previous MI films, and this was one was enjoyable, but it didn't really excite me the way the first two did (maybe I'm just getting old and jaded).  Jeremy Renner's character didn't really add much to the whole mix, contrary to the implications in the trailer, and Simon Pegg was better used than in the third film, but still undervalued.

I own the first film on DVD, and would happily re-watch MI:2 or MI:3, but I'm not sure I would be all that bothered if I never saw MI:GP again.  There just wasn't anything particularly memorable which warrants a second viewing.  Even the "flagship" Dubai scene on the Burj Khalifa wasn't all that spectacular...

I do. If I book a seat online, and when I get there find someone else sitting I don't just go away. I ask the people to move.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil, (which to be honest was hired by my 17-year old Son last night.)

Having said that, I enjoyed it a lot!  It's a Black Comedy/Horror, and much funnier than I had originally thought it might be.

Hugo. What was I thinking!

I like the films aimed at a younger audience, films like Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, How to Train Your Dragon, the Ice Age serious, toy story 1,2 & 3 and the fantastic 'Up' were all great films.

So I watched Hugo with the impression it was going to be another great fantasy story. What a crap boringly slow with a dumb ending of a film.

Bad. 1/10
