Went and watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind last night. The hoyts cinemas are playing old movies on Sunday's. Movie was excellent 8/10 second time I have seen it. They gave out spot prizes last night too. I managed to get a $10 subway voucher. You should check out the movies they are playing. $15 with drink, popcorn and ice-cream. Sweet deal.

Watched Drive on Bluray last night, really underwhelming, not quite sure how it got the rave reviews that I had read. It had potential to ramp up to a good thriller or action film but instead felt like half of the plot of a film stretched over the duration of a full film, my flatmate felt the same. 3/10 Rare Exports Watched this on the big screen back in 2010 and picked it up on Bluray a few weeks ago. Finnish film with subtitles not that that should put anyone off, Based off a couple of short films off Youtube, excellent film with well nuanced characters and a great premise. 8/10

Watched My week with Marilyn last night. Not bad, good acting, but do they make it so she looks like the dumb blond? On the other hand she tries to show disconnection between reality and glamour, etc, etc. Lots of known starts. 6/10 Also watched The adventures of TinTin... The animation is great, and in some places hard to believe these are not real scenes filmed in a real set. The story is kind of ok, I give it overall 7.5/10. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1: Similar to others a solid 1/10 from me. Missus turn to choose the movie (oh dear god save me!). Just a solid yawn-fest. I don't think anything actually happened. Underworld: Awakening Pleased to see Kate back in all her slender glory with a blistering array of weapons, so for that alone it gets a 6/10. Obviously made for 3D. Story line was a bit shallow compared to the others and felt it was missing an least one major scene somewhere...now back to Kate :-) Artificial intelligence is no match, for natural stupidity!

Finally got around to watching Tintin in 3D (Yes it's still playing at the Monterey in Howick!). I was quite bored of it 25 mins in... and then it just basically went ballistic towards the end and over the top like Indy's Crystal Skull. 5/10 I hope Peter Jackson can make a better movie out of the sequel.

The Girl Who Played with Fire - 7.5/10 Continuing with the Millenium Trilogy, I watched the second in the series, having finished the second book a few weeks ago. I'm glad they kept the main actors in their roles - both Michael Nyquist and Noomi Rapace capture their characters well. I'd heard from some quarters that the second book was better than the first. I'm not so sure, though I did enjoy it immensely. However, while the film was good, I think the book was better. I think the film's main failing was in keeping up the suspense that the book created. There's a section where Blomvkist and the police are investigating the murders, and Salander doesn't turn up for ages. I think this contributed really well for the book's storytelling. However, in the film, there's no such experience, and I think the story suffers for it. There's also a lot of peripheral stuff which is lost which makes the book more enjoyable than the film. I guess this is understandable, given the length of the book and the short time the film has to tell the story. My wife, who hasn't read the books, enjoyed the film a lot, and thought it was better than the first, but I suspect she might have felt differently had she read the book. I guess there's still a bit of time before the American version of the second film comes out. In the meantime, I'll have to read the third book before watching the Swedish version of the final film.

Cars 2 - 6/10 As it turns out, it is possible for Pixar to do an uninspired sequel. Adventures of Tintin - 8.5/10 As an old Tintin fan (read the books, own the DVD box set), I really enjoyed it. And the CG was just brilliant. I did find it a bit too fast, though. The old Tintin wasn't as action-hero-y as Peter Jackson's. "Roads? It was Spielberg who directed Tintin btw... hence my Crystal Skull comment :) Just watched The Thing prequel. 2/10 Weak storyline and characters, and exceptionally terrible CGI work. Started with such promise but it quickly dissipated into predictability that took away the "scare" factor.

I watched The Hunger Games last night. I normally hate the drivel that Hollywood produces, can predict the plot lines & don't enjoy myself. I love sci-fi & this movie was awesome, an excellent plot line and quite engrossing. What was quite funny was sitting in a movie theatre with a bunch of teenagers who didn't quite understand the movie, lauging at the wrong time etc. Now where's my stick to shake at them...

Had you read the book? I haven't, but I do love dystopian stories and movies so could be keen to see this. I just can't shake the whole "sounds like an American version of Battle Royale" feeling though.

No, I haven't read the book, but I certainly will be after seeing it. People who have read the book and seen the movie didn't seem to enjoy it as much because they knew more about what was going on from what I understand from my friends. It's a pretty long movie, 142min!

I was slightly distracted though, as went with a friend who hadn't read the books, so I kept thinking about whether she was picking up the important subtle plot points that I already knew. It has been well made and well acted which is refreshing for an American franchise aimed at young adults (yes a twilight dig) Give it an 8/10

I read the book about 3 years ago and re-read it last week in preparation. I wish I hadn't. I spent more time watching for the little details, and trying to second guess how thy we're going to portray this thing or that, than actually just watching the film. My wife, who didn't re-read seemed to enjoy it more. That said, it was a great film. I liked how they eschewed the traditional bug action scene up front to get the audience's attention, instead going for more of a slow burner approach. All the actors did a great job and obviously understood their characters fully. I'm looking forward to seeing Donald Sutherland as President Snow in the next film. I haven't seen Battle Royale but a lot of people are concerned about it being a ripoff of that film. From what I understand, HG is a bit more political and less gory. I'm planning to watch Battle Royale soon so I can compare properly, but I think the similarities are superficial. I give Hunger Games 8.5/10

Thirteen Days - 9/10 I re-watched Thirteen Days yesterday, and it's still a great movie (Kevin Costner notwithstanding). I've seen this film multiple times, and I love how it keeps the suspense building, even though everyone already knows that it doesn't lead to an all-out nuclear war (sorry if that spoiled it for anyone). Bruce Greenwood and Steven Culp are great as the Kennedy brothers - Steven Culp in particular, having now played RFK twice in different films. When I first saw it I wondered how close it was to the real story, particularly in terms of Costner's role, which seemed to be a fictional character through which the audience views the events. But I've since discovered that Ken O'Donnell (Costner's character) was real, and his portrayal seems to be broadly correct. He was a political advisor to the Kennedy's, and was part of their trusted inner circle (along with Ted Sorenson, played by Tim Kelleher who, for me, will always be Jim Steele, with the creepy eyes, from the Kennedy-era Dark Skies). It's a great film because it captures the tension and the urgency of the situation really well, but is still very engaging for people who aren't political junkies.
