Watch the BD of Apollo 18 last nite. Don't even bother to rent it or even download it it's that bad. The finance committee and I both like SciFi but this was like Blair Witch on the moon.

urban: It was Spielberg who directed Tintin btw...   hence my Crystal Skull comment :)

I actually cited Peter Jackson because it was made at Weta, but you're right. The blame is on Spielberg for this one. :)

Watched the Hunger Games yesterday.

After all the hype I thought it was a bit 'meh''... Hollywoods insistence on casting good looking actors rather than ones that can act can be very annoying.

If you like square jaws and butt chins then you will probably love this movie

Contagion - 5/10

I watched this film last night.  When it came out at the theatres I heard some really good things about this film, so I had high hopes.  However, after 102 mins the best I could say about the film was that it wasn't 103mins.  Talk about dull!  Reviews talked about the film being thought-provoking and intelligent.  I thought it was about as thought-provoking and intelligent as the 6 o'clock news.  The plot of the film, for the uninitiated, is that a deadly new virus emerges with the potential to wreak devestation on the world's population.  On paper, that sounds like a great premise for a film.  You could take that idea and turn it into a great action film, or a smart thriller/drama.  But instead, Contagion comes out as clinical and boring.  All the interesting ideas (someone is immune to the disease/the breakdown of social order/the ethics of untested vaccines/the conspiracy of pharmaceutical businesses) are pointed out to the viewer, like being taken on a tour by a guide, but are never properly explored.  The interesting premises just wither and die, and the film feels very hollow and dull.

None of the actors in the ensemble cast really shine - possibly the only moment of note is (spoiler) Matt Damon's poignant display of a man unable to comprehend that his wife went from "a bit under the weather" one minute, to dead the next.  But it doesn't even come close to saving a film that doesn't really say anything...

Wasn't impressed with Hunger games (Have not read the books but may consider them as I've read the later books improve on the first considerably.), it just dragged on too long, I almost fell asleep which would've been the first time that has happened in a cinema for me. Where there was promise they didn't extrapolate on it but hopefully sequels would fill that in and expand the premise to something substantial, shaky cam puts me off the action scenes I would rather see the action than be shaken right past it.
Battle Royale and The Running Man both did this before and were more satisfying movies, I suppose if I wanted teen angst then I would have enjoyed it more.
I will give Elizabeth Banks credit for her acting, I didn't think I could dislike her but she played the part very well and I couldn't stand her, the sign of a great actress.
5/10

It's kind of a funny story, 7/10
Had no idea what to expect from this, my flatmate recommended it. Rather Heartwarming drama/comedy about a suicidal 16 year old admitting himself to the Psych ward at a Hospital. It sounds completely by the numbers but had a heartfelt honesty to it which I found made for a rather good film that left me smiling at the end.

I watched The Raid last night...

9/10

Gratuitous violence at it's best!   Beats Oldboy, which is also awesome!

gehenna: Rented I Saw The Devil on my Apple TV last night.  Part of me wishes I hadn't, but the other part is blown away by the quality of Koren cinema and storytelling.

This movie isn't for the faint hearted, it deals with some extreme subject matter.  If you've seen Oldboy you'll sort of know what I'm talking about.

IMDB Link

"When his pregnant fiancee becomes the latest victim of a serial killer, a secret agent blurs the line between good and evil in his pursuit of revenge."

I watched this over the long weekend. What a truly epic experience that was! If you havn't seen it, but enjoy a good violent thriller you can't go wrong here! I used to rate Taken as my favourite in the genre, although good, it hasn't got a patch on I saw the devil.

Having been blown away by it i investigated Korean thrillers a bit further and watched "The Chaser" last night, i give this a solid 9/10, it gets a bit slow for 20mins while it builds the story and characters but definitely makes up for it and picks up the pace with half an hour to go.

Next on the list is Yellow Sea which ill hopefully watch tonight. Also on the list is "The man from nowhere", and i must rewatch Oldboy as i seen that in 2005 and its a distant memory.

I'm watching 9 at the moment with the kids it's a pretty good story about some dolls which have had their world taken over and their struggle to keep themselves safe. Very good if you like animated movies.

As for the Raid I'm seeing this on Wenesday after missing the premierre due to my brother in law forgetting to bring his id along. He's paying for it too to make up for it. :-)

Wrong Turn 4 - ok, it has boobies, lesbians and gore, but the acting is crap, and the story only seems to have one actual thing that connects it to the other 3 movies. (apart from the gore, hillbillies etc)

Sitting down to watch Source Code tonight....

I watched Megamind and found it to be fairly enjoyable, which was a pleasant surprise given my extreme dislike of anything that Will Ferrell is usually associated with. Nothing particularly deep given that it's a CG cartoon, but it was actually surprisingly funny at times and had a reasonably satisfying, if not fairly predictable story. 7/10.

Now for my next trick, make the g/f watch Highlander which she's never seen. To be fair, it is a bit crap, bit it's classic crap.

I wish it was playing in a cinema somewhere around me, i would even drive to Nelson and back (260km round trip) to watch it, but alas its not even playing there. Will have to wait for it on Bluray. Consider yourself lucky its playing on the big screen! Smile

It's already out on bluray in the UK, let your fingers do the walking...

Just saw an advanced screening of The Cabin in the Woods.

I only knew a bit about the story based on trailers, and it took me completely by surprise in a very good way. A lot of the time, it seemed more like a comedy, in fact... but that's not bad by any means. I think "horror" films are pretty amusing most of the time anyway, so when hilarity is intended (and they pull it off), I approve.

I'd say it's a very good movie, and well worth paying for a seat in the cinema!
