Watched Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol last night.

Certainly a sequel of sequels, worth no more than 6/10. One of the characters was just an idiot instead of being a freaking hacking genius, like Luther in the first movie. But hey, the first Mission Impossible was made in 1996, when studios released better things than today.

Avengers - 9.5/10

There really isn't much to say about this film, other than it is probably the most fun, entertaining and enjoyable film I've seen in years.  When I walked out of the cinema, I was seriously tempted to get back in line to watch it all over again.  As it happens, though, I'm going back to see it next week with sister-in-law.  I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a film enough to want to walk straight back in again (probably The Matrix?)

I think the Hulk was one of the best characters, which surprised me as neither of the previous film incarnations of the Hulk really worked for me.  I think Mark Ruffalo did an amazing job of creating a sincere and authentic Bruce Banner to match Bill Bixby's approach in the old TV series.

There was a good balance between action and humour, something which has Joss Whedon's fingerprints all over it.  The interaction between the main cast is peppered with some classic one-liners, and great visual jokes which capture the comic-book origins perfectly.

If you're even remotely into superhero stories, then you definitely want to see this movie.  I don't think 3D or not will make a difference.  It's a post-filming conversion jobby, but it's not too ramped up, and isn't distracting.

Green Lantern - 2/10

If I had watched this film before I saw Avengers, then I might have been tempted to give it 4/10, but having seen the Marvel masterpiece that Joss Whedon has created, the Green Lantern looks like a crayon scribble by a sleepy toddler.  Pointless, confused, unfunny, dull, unimaginative, and boring.  The central concept of the film - harnessing the energy of "will" to create anything you can imagine - seems pretty cool on paper.  But it rapidly becomes too stupid for words.  If you had such power, why bother imagining an anti-aircraft gun to fight an alien horde, when you could much more quickly and simply fire a bolt of energy.  Once you scratch beneath the surface, the fundamental idea of the story is nothing but an excuse for the artist (and now the animators) to draw something other than endless laser blasts.  Sounds like the comic-book equivalent of a make-work scheme...

As for the acting (term used reservedly), it's bottom of the barrel stuff.  I normally enjoy films with Ryan Reynolds - he's an actor who can inject sarcastic humour into pretty much any situation, usually improving it.  But he seemed to have left his "funny" in his other pants, and only had "earnestness" in his acting wallet.  And it was cringe-inducing.  I can only hope that, despite the attempt to foreshadow a sequel Marvel-style, there is no sequel.  If there is, I bet it will be straight-to-VHS (don't even bother with DVD, let alone BluRay).

networkn: By comparison, taken was one of the best movies I'd ever seen.. the scene where he was talking his daughter through her kidnapping was very very intense.

There were some BRILLIANT moments in that movie. One of the great "you messed with the wrong guy" flicks. Some of it was a bit too contrived & cheesy for my liking, but I did enjoy it.

Loving all the comments about the Avengers movie. Looks awesome. I very nearly went this weekend but didn't want to share my cold with the rest of the cinema.

Caught Avengers last Friday too, excellent film 9-9.5/10 I'm going again this Friday with the family and looking forward to it. Lizard1977's review mirrors my opinion of it almost exactly.

Watched a few movies since last post, so here goes:

Food, Inc. - 7/10
Inside Job-style documentary on the food industry. Quite nice, but it didn't have the effect on me that the director intended. After watching it, I felt like going to KFC. Weird.

Like Water - 8/10
Great documentary following Anderson Silva all the way to his 2010 fight with master douchebag Chael Sonnen. Recommended for all UFC/Pride fans.

The Two Escobars - 8.5/10
Another documentary, this time from ESPN Films' 30 for 30 series, depicting the rise and fall of Colombian soccer (and Pablo Escobar's drug cartel) around the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Brilliant story-telling.

TT3D: Closer to the Edge - 9/10
A (guess!) documentary following Guy Martin during an Isle of Man's TT weekend. Must watch for any motorsport aficionado.

Trainspotting - 7/10
Not sure how to describe this one. Danny Boyle (director) has a weird mind. Good, but in unexpected ways.

Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows - 6.5/10
Sequel to an excellent movie, this one disappointed me. Probably because I watched BBC's Sherlock TV series between the first movie and this one.

Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day - 7/10, 9/10
First one was definitely worth watching for the plot points that went into the second one, which was just as awesome as I expected. Hadn't really watched them fully until recently. First one didn't age as well as the second one.

More to come after lunch...

Avengers, yup completely awesome, 10/10. there was nothing in that movie i didnt like. really funny at times, good length (was a bit long, but didnt drag or seem that long like most movies).

joss whedon pulled it off, i was expecting it to be a let down.

oh and the PS at the end of the movie wasnt after all the credits, just a short few credits which is good (hate sitting around through all the credits to see the PS).

I watched Chronicle yesterday and though it was pretty good if your interested in that type of story (3 boys get telekinitec powers and the story details how it impacts on them yadda yadda) 7.5 out of 10.

I suggest you watch the trailer first to see if you think it may be interesting or not as it's filmed handycam approach style which may not be to everyone's liking.

Watched The Grey on iTunes. I give it 8/10 - and you have to stay until the end of the credits.

Also watched The Vow. A bit weak, give it 6/10.

Caught Man on a Ledge the other night, 7/10 nice slow burning thriller, not as great as Inside Man but still well worth a watch.

In the weekend I watched a couple of classics with my 4 boys...

Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal both were enjoyed by them very much and yet again by me.

On Monday we watched John Carter and I can see why it cost so much to make and also why it was a financial flop. Shame really as we quite enjoyed the movie but it was just that enjoyable not terrible not great which is what Disney had hoped for especially considering the budget of the movie. I feel if it had been made closer to the book as in a little more for a mature audience it probably would have done well.

The other thing I watched with my boys in the weekend although not a movie it was very interesting it was Being Elmo A Puppeteers Journey a documentary on Kevin Clash the man behind Elmo. For me I really enjoyed it as it went through the whole evolution of Kevin's life and how he ended up where he has. It was not all about Elmo too which is good as I am not a Elmo fan lol it showed Kevin's involvement with Frank Oz and Jim Henson. I would recommend watching this if you ever liked Sesame Street, Muppets or any form of puppetry.
