NZSki putting prices up all around, scrapping student season pass

Hey guys, Just like to pass on some info around NZSki(incorporating Mt Hutt, Remarkables etc). They have put prices up significantly allround. Early bird adults up $100 to $679. This is a pretty large jump! Also student season passes scrapped altogether. Uni students now pay full price($679) up from 2009s student rate of $479!!! Please head to Mt Hutts facebook page and let your displeasure be known if you can! The more public support, maybe we can get the money grubbers running the ski resorts look after their "bread and butter" customers a bit better!!! Cheers The force is strong with this one!

I know this comment will open up a whole can of worms.. But why should students get cheaper rates? They're still using the same facilities as everybody else! *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

I think the idea is to make it affordable for those on a student income (ie not working full time or in a professional career) Some would also say that students have more time to get 'up the mountain' or so they think so are more likely to buy the season pass. Alternatively it may also be a way of getting a mix in your client base so you don't have to deal with a whole lot of right wing winers during the weekdays, who don't quite have enough money to get to the french alps during our summer!

Transport and food are needs. There is nothing wrong with offering discounts for students. Skiing is a want, not a need. It's a luxury in life. I'd love to have a season pass also but don't see them offering discounts for unemployed people! *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

Why students would get a cheaper price, funny enough would be that NZSki would get more money. There is an accounting technique called (I think) called step pricing. Basically NZSki would set multiple prices for different categories of people, like they have done in the past. What this does is for people who can afford and don't mind doing so, pay the highest price. Students, a different group of people, pay a lower price, because they can't afford the higher price, and since it is lower more students buy the season passes therefore more income to NZSki. What I am guessing this year, is NZSki wants to keep the pricing "fair and transparent" and they think that the increase in price to the students is not going to harm numbers / overall income. Bit silly in this current economic climate... andysh

To be honest its the price hike alround coupled with the getting rid of student passes that has really grated with me. The people who buy a season pass provide Mt hutt with money in the bank whatever the conditions. The day trippers dont. Students often go up midweek and spend money in the cafe, on lessons, on equipment hire etc etc when most others cannot get there. Its pretty obvious that NZSki is primarily pandering to overseas visitors now. If we dont act an make our displeasure felt then ordinary Kiwis will not be able to enjoy some of the worlds best skiing and riding in our own backyard! The force is strong with this one!
