Topic # 58073 6-Mar-2010 12:11 Send private message

I recently purchased an item on Trade Me and paid for it using pay now. The seller is being a bit difficult, and amongst other things is telling me that Trade Me's instructions to people accepting pay now payments is to wait a minimum of 3 days before posting items to mitigate the risk of credit card fraud. Does anyone know if this is the case? It's not something I have come across before, but I want to get the facts right before I say something to him.

Apologies if someone has asked this previously - I've searched but can't find anything.

Cheers

Well it does say on TradeMe that Pay Now payments can take up to 3 business days to show in the sellers account so they could be talking about that.
They may not have seen the payment come through on their end yet so don't want to send the goods until they do.
It does also say though that the goods must be shipped within 3 days of receiving the payment into their account.

Thanks. I missed that on the Trade Me website. That's probably what he's getting at, although it was put to me as much more of a 'Trade Me tells us we must never ship until at least three days after you have paid'.

The excuse the use is silly, since you can do a chargeback or a victim find out their card was used fraudulently long long after 3 days, but...

Important facts

  • You need to send the goods within 3 days of receiving payment notification from us.

So as long as they send within 3 days, they are OK.

If you accept a pay now payment trademe send you instructions advising you to ship the goods so the 3 day excuse is bs.

The actual wording from Trade Me help is:

"After the auction closes
Buyers can pay by credit card and enter their delivery address. We then email you confirmation of payment and the buyer's delivery address. You need to ship the goods within 3 days of receiving payment confirmation.

Pay Now payments are deposited into your nominated bank account within 3 business days. You can track all of your payments through your Pay Now account ledger on My Trade Me."

Therefore, item should be shipped within 3 days of paying (i.e. email confrimation from Trade Me of payment).  The payment should be deposited in the nominated bank account within 3 business days, but that doesn't mean the seller should wait for that to send the goods.
