I hate the new layout. It looks like one of those spam sites you accidentally stumble onto.

If you hate it as much as I do and use Firefox, install this Greasemonkey script, making sure you have Greasemonkey installed first.

Agreed. I hate it.

I'm gonna get rid of it. It's useless to me.

tristanb: A temporary fix is to change your homepage to http://www.google.co.nz/webhp?hl=all . (I say temporary because Google will likely put an end to this page)

Thanks for the tip - done.  Agree they'll probably can it in the not too distant future though.

tristanb: If I wanted a sidebar, I'd use Bing. If I wanted clutter, I'd use Yahoo!

Very nicely put!  I think this would have the potential to be a bonanza for Bing, but have my doubts about the ability of Microsoft marketing machine to move quickly...

manta: The results from google.co.nz are different depending on whether you select(ed) "google search", or "Pages from NZ".

With the "old" version of google, if you wanted pages from NZ it was a radio button click and one search.  Now it is a search and then another search.

So nothing to do with checking my system; merely a wish that we could choose which option we wanted as a default.

I just did a search for "Orchard" (looking for the MS project).  The top few pages were all .co.nz domains.  I get the feeling they've screwed up the search too - now it automatically favours local pages, and you can't turn it off!

When you're on google.co.nz and you do a search it has added extra weighting to local results even without using the pages from NZ option this is how it's always worked for the regional domains for a very long time.

Go to google.com if you want the US regionalised results.

I've just discovered that using IE 6.0 gets the old Google.

Does anyone have a user-agent changer for firefox?

If so, are you able to try "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0)" limited to google.co*?

I wouldn't be surprised if google used some other detection method (e.g. javascript availability) but I feel it's worth a try.

With the increasing number of websites removing support for Internet Explorer 6.0 on new features, changing your user-agent string is a sure way to get stuck.

This is lame, Google I hate you, we are over. Why did you have to take away the "pages from New Zealand" bit, you really have let yourself go.... Not cool Mate, not on.

That's the whole point! Ajax floating ads/sidebars are ruining the internet! :-D

I've tested it, and switching your User-Agent string to IE6.0 brings back the old Google. I have installed http://chrispederick.com/work/user-agent-switcher/ which works, although I'd like to find one that could adjust itself depending on the website.

I like the way how they have more of the features out at my finger tips, rather than buried a little deeper but I really really wish they didn't still have bits hidden on the left hand. As I'm still getting the feeling that for a lot of common stuff I'm having to do a lot more clicks than I used to be which is really annoying

It's also nice to have the option to be able to choose the options in the sidebar but also the exact same ones in the bar along the top. It's nice to know if one button stops working that I have a backup I can use.

on the old design didn't we have to click the "new zealand" results only option anyway..to select the box...as it defaulted to the worldwide option??
So its the same now - except you press search before narrowing to NZ results, as opposed to click NZ and then Search.

People always complain about new things :P
at the end of the day its a search engine, and it works well...thats how I look at it anyway :)

I'm curious to know if anyone thinks they've changed their behavior on searching for New Zealand websites when going through Google.co.nz without being able to select the "Pages from New Zealand" until after the search has taken place?

Anyone found themselves putting and "nz" onto the end of their searches (like so many do and more used to) to shorten the process for finding New Zealand related websites?
