Anyone had any experience with making a claim with AA for contents?

Just wondering what I am in for. So far they seem incredibly slow (today is 5th day).

They have a new for old policy, but they only mentioned 4 retailers - so I wonder how they get on with replacing things chain stores don't sell.

"Slow" is just such a relative term depending on context. In Christchurch I only had to wait 3.5 months for my first contents claim post September 2010 to be settled. I'm still waiting (but not anxious) for my second contents claim post February 2011. They reckon it will be paid by Christmas 2011. I'll give them till May 2012 before I get on the phone. The advantage of the delay was I hadn't replaced contents by June 2011 so didn't have to reclaim. I'm expecting my house insurance to be settled sometime around 2014 - 2015. In the meantime I can't increase my contents cover. NZ's insurance landscape has changed.

We've had fairly good experiences making claims with AA. Both for a camera and car repair.

Possibly depends on the CSR we had a really great one with the Camera problem. But overall found them ok to deal with.

Were you ringing them or off an online form?

i've had excellent service with aa claims on the three i've made in the past 10 years. i've dealt with them by email in all cases. for a stolen snowboard a few years back, they gave me a cheque instead of store credit...

Over phone. So with the camera... presumably they physically replaced it, not cash or store credit? If so were you given choice from pool of models? If it were store credit, is it voucher for say N.L to buy whatever you like up to what they deem value of new equivalent replacement camera would be?

How long did it take from claim to being told cheque was going to be issued? Was the cheque for enough to make straight purchase of equivalent board?

Sort of (the N.L. thing).  they say go spend x, but if N.L. then you can spend x+ (a little bit more, they seem to have some deal), so we replaced a $200 P&S camera (that was actually replaced on insurance previously) with a DSLR spending the difference.

Best move we ever made.

the board was a few years old. the cheque was enough to replace with a brand new 'equivalent' board.  i.e. if original cost me $1K, they gave me a cheque for $1k less excess.  Cant remember how long it took in total, it was a few years back now.

My last claim was in 2009, for a camera.  I still have the emails.  Lodged on the 9th October, Store Credit was available from Noel Leeming on the 21st October.

i did exactly the same thing upgrading P&S to DSLR.  Noel Leeming were awesome, i also had some gift vouchers that i cashed in along with the insurance credit and some extra cash for the purchase.
