Stories like this make me mad. Dude! You're giving New Zealand a bad name!

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10757699

He says "The higher price on game-day is because I have to put on eight staff instead of two. If people think it is too high I can't make them buy it. They can go somewhere else."

Surely the reason you have to put 8 staff on is because you will be MUCH BUSIER. Presumably this brings in much more revenue, without having to being opportunistic with your pricing. I hope your business severly drops off after this bad publicity!

This also reminds me what my friend told me. He is concierge at a premium Auckland hotel, they hiked their prices so high, that they have many many empty rooms, and now cant fill them. Serves them right, I say.

End of Rant.

Cheers,l
Joseph

Campbell Live did an item on prices during the world cup, Wellington i think, and one cafe was selling Kronenbourg beer for $18 a bottle and 2 gelato ice creams were $15, not sure how busy they were.

Considering the mark-up on coffees is fairly high, surely even the standard price would cover the costs of extra staff to cover for the extra customers?

At $7.50 for a 330ml can of beer is the reason why I wont EVER consider purchasing or consuming Heinekin beer. Don't like being ripped off in a captive environment.

agreed!

Unless the six other staff were acting as bouncers, one would think the extra staff were required due to six fold demand = 6 fold profit??

At least it stops the number of drunks in the city.

It's like mobile data costs prevent copyright piracy.

This sort of thing is exactly why tourism New Zealand won't see any growth as a direct result of the RWC. People will just remember being ripped off.

I think that, in general, the customer service experience that New Zealand businesses generally offer is rubbish too. Staff at many businesses seem to think they're much more important than the customers. Especially baristas - get over youselves...you're only coffee makers...

Inside stadium food and drink pricing is pretty high too.It would have to be perfect coffee for $8, I wonder if they had many people return them due to them not meeting an $8 standard.

Once you have travelled a bit you will discover that being ripped off is just part of the fun of being a tourist. Next years Olympics will be no different - ic some hotels are already putting prices up 40%. You have to remember thr are two sides to a transaction - offer and acceptance.

Only 40%?  Beats the 1000% some of our hotels ramped up prices by.

Really? I hadn't seen it. That's my favourite and sounds like they jsut made it better!

As for pricing, I thought F&B prices at the ground were pretty decent. $7.50 for a beer is reasonable bar prices, $8 for an average burger was a bit higher than expected but the fish and chips for $9 isn't too bad. Plus the sauce (tomato and tartare) is free!

I was talking about this just the other night with friends over from nz. Last time I was back home in feb this year I was amazed at how expensive everything was, I pity the tourist getting gouged to the extent they seem to be from reports I have seen.

Really? I found everything to cost about the same AUD$ for NZD$. I guess it depends what you're buying.

It was either cheaper or the same. Lots was cheaper. And when you consider the higher wages...
Wages vs cost = better.

Things like dairy and coffee, a $4.50 coffee there costs $5.80-6+ here.
