Hi,

Do you happen to know a debt collector in Hamilton that would bother to collect $150? I would offer $100 fee.
Long story short, I've sold something on trademe, the buyer emailed saying that the payment has been made and I mistakenly saw in my online banking another payment so I've mailed the parcel.
It turned out that the buyer did not pay and is ignoring my emails. I've placed bad feedback but nothing. Even more, he logs on trademe almost every day and even completed other trades since.

I've emailed trademe and they said there isn't much they can do and the disputes tribunal does not help with bad debts.

Any thoughts? I want to push this through more out of principle rather than to get most of the money back. Maybe the idiot will learn a lesson, although it's unlikely to.

Thanks.

Talk to Aarok-afk on gpforums. He's awesome with this kind of stuff and helped me with Trademe cheats before :)

Do you have an invoice? I'd say deb collection agencies would "buy" your invoice and go after the person. If you have no document then I'm not sure there's a case for it...

Are you sure the disputes tribunal can't help? I believe an auction is a legal contract so they are obligated to pay if they won it. You could check with the laws regarding auctions.
I thought you only couldn't use the disputes tribunal, if you had already taken it to a collection agency, and thus they now own the debt.

Yes, I do as I am the seller and I trade through a company. I'll contact Aaron and let you know about the outcome.

Thanks.

I presume you have the buyer's address - you could go for a visit...

Edit: grammar.

Hi,

Any other thoughts on this? Aaron only replied advising that he's on leave during December and nothing since.
The buyer had the nerve to reply to my bad feedback saying that she put the money into the wrong account and tried to recover from the bank without success and that she will pay that day (22nd of December). Obviously a lie to look good on her feedback page.

She's not answering to any of my emails nor to questions on one of her auctions. I told her that the debt will be sold to a debt collector but also no reply.

Thanks.

Quick update. Have decided to go ahead with Central Collections (http://www.centralcollections.co.nz).
They have responded immediately and their fees are quite OK. $10 new customer fee, $5 for each debt loaded, $5 to default the debt with Veda Advantage (this one is quite nice as pretty much everybody works with Veda, good luck to the debtor in getting a phone account or other post-paid accounts).
If collection is successful there's a 20% + GST fee.

Cheers

Well, even if they don't recover anything, $20 is not the end of the world. But sadly, yes, NZ seems to go the same way as the rest of the world.

If the "nice" debt collectors dont work, I know some Hamilton debt collectors of the "nice kneecaps guvnor, pay up if you want to keep em" variety.

Somehow I tend to believe that they would charge way more than the debt itself ;)

You'd be surprised what people will do for $100
