Are people really taking this seriously? It's a joke, right?

As for the queuing/deodorant thing, I'm sure he's taking the proverbial out of http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/oppn-mp-apologises-for-body-odour-remarks-20120110-1ps54.html

I doubt the "immigrants" she was referring to are Kiwis, but I could be wrong...

Cloudmelon: I was pretty surprised after reading this, interested to hear other thoughts.

It is not that surprising.

An Australian writing for the Brisbane Times taking the piss out of NZ.

Not really surprising nor something to read too much into.

What exactly did you find surprising about this? Maybe it is something entirely different to what we have assumed?

Apart from the bit about deodorant (and maybe the napalm lamb barbecue) it is all in good taste and mostly a list of good things in NZ that the writer would like to take and add to Australia.

I was surprised because I didn't think it fitted into either the joke or serious discussion categories.

Just seemed like the start of a weird rant, then again maybe I don't have his 'unique' humour.

I can see what you mean by that.

I was walking through Sydney's main transport terminal in the middle of the day a few years back, I heard some yellling at the other end of the terminal, there was a loud group of semi-inebriated corporate partiers waiting for a party bus. They were yelling stuff like "@$#%-ing Kiwi blah blah" in an incredibly nasty way at random people passing by. Looked like they were having a kiwi guessing game and trying to get a reaction to confirm it. Most people in earshot looked really shocked by this behavior.

That was pretty weird, but that element does exist..

Unfortunately that goes both ways, there are just as many knobs over here with the same attitude against the Aussies

6. We could gather up all of their abandoned military equipment and make the Australian Defence Force 2 per cent bigger.

Gold.

It's obviously a parody piece.

Indeed, this poor attitude was displayed at the RWC 2011.

It still is.. Ask any Aussie that lives here that doesn't even follow rugby... It happens almost daily.
People even try to use it in an argument! :/

The rugby stuff is generally good natured on both sides. But, on the other side of the Tasman they also have the the "Kiwis are stealing our jobs" thing, with everything that kind of thinking implies.

I've been living in NZ for 4 years and don't get it that much, although when I do I just tell them I'm from Western Australia and couldn't give a damn about Rugby - I sometimes then get comments about a certain underarm bowling incident that happened 30 years ago that most Australians are just as annoyed about.

There's probably a few people on both sides that have a genuine dislike to the other country but I see it as a sibling relationship, we give each other a hard time but in the end we'll be there for one another (Chch quakes, QLD floods etc etc). I also think that Australians have a slightly rougher sense of humour than Kiwis which can lead to offence being taken, and some Kiwis can find be overly sensitive about Australians saying anything bad about New Zealand.

I've been here from Sydney since 2002. Once, at work, we had a gumboot throwing competition. I threw under-arm, and won.

Just sayin'.

I think that is one reason why many NZ companies struggle when they expand into OZ. In Oz they like to support their own countries businesses. The same however doesn't apply in NZ, NZers will often buy from the cheapest (or appears the cheapest), even if that means buying from Ozzie owned chains, which many NZ store now are.
