http://www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/around-nz/road-user-rule.html

Soon to be heavily advertised, but I think most know about it.

Thoughts?

Personally Im worried about roundabout confusion. Those rules haven't changed, but people are confused enough with them now. Lets make them think that they can now turn left without giving way and see where that gets us.....

I think most people understand the existing rule, many people just choose to ignore it in favour of saving a precious few seconds.

Changing rules like this seems like a recipe for confusion though. Is there genuinely a _good_ reason for the change?

"You are" = "You're" - Not "Your".  "They are" = "They're" - Not "Their" or "There".  You probably mean "lose" not "loose".  There's no such word as "Alot".

While people may see the proposed changes as confusing you have to remember we are the only country in the world who works the current way.

Two things are going to happen in the short term: 1. traffic flow at uncontrolled intersections is going to slow down and 2. vehicle collisions are going to increase. Lets hope the $10 million advertising campaign due to launch a week or so before the change is simple and clear in its message.

I was driving when the rule changed to the current rule and didn't see mass carnage, I don't see any reason for there to be a problem now its going back to the way it was.

Yes; when I first moved here I nearly had about 20 accidents before I finally realised what was going on. It's about time it went away.

personally i think its stupid, the give way to right helps traffic, the person turning across always has to wait, and now they will have to wait longer.

my work is on great south road (very busy road), i turn right into my building, i have to wait until an empty spot and there are always a few cars turning left into my building, now ill have to wait for all them to turn in and then by the time that finished the lights will have changed and i will have to wait for another gap to turn into my building.

what idiot decided to change this rule?

Apparently advertising is only going to start 10days before these rules come into effect.

I dont see any big issues either. Most immigrants and the older NZ generation will have no hassle with the change. Its the younger generation of drivers that have only driven in NZ that may find it hard.

Roundabouts all stay the same.

Personally I can't wait for this new rule to come into effect.

This rule change makes sense. The current system is illogical.

+1. I too was driving before the rule changed to its current form. I think commentators underestimate the abilty of Kiwis to understand something new. The change is no big deal (so long as everyone knows the change is being made). It's not rocket science FGS.

but the current system does help traffic flow, if you look at all those examples on the govt page, the person who will have to give way come 25th May will have to wait longer, the person who will now have right of way would not have a problem with traffic when turning, they dont need to wait a long time for a gap in the traffic. thats why the current system is good.

EDIT: im not saying the change is confusing or hard to follow, im just saying the old system had more a big benefit.  and it was easy to remember, "always give way to right", simple.

... 25 March! Please don't drive for two months longer under the old rule.

This one for example, has been the norm in practice for some time.

The  current rule should allow the red car to go first. It never worked in practice though. At least now its official in the new rules.

I have never seen the green car give way under current rules. Most dont even know that rule exists......
