huntlai: i personally looking forward for the "new" rules.. the currently rules really give me a shock when i first moved here and totally no idea why people showing anger @ me whenever I am turning left :P

Sorry, but any drivers coming to New Zealand should plan and learn the road rules. "Totally no idea" is not an excuse. Was it while holding a NZ licence, or still driving on your old overseas licence?

got to admit that's one of area i overlooked, taking assumption of NZ inherit/follow GB traffic system is real nono...

still holding overseas license but in progress changing to NZ license now. it's real load of things to learn being #newkiwi :D

I too am old enough (just) to have driven under both the original rule and the current one and also driven overseas and all I can say is bring on the change. While the current "give way to the right under all circumstances" rule has it's merits, for all the reasons about the "blue car" going straight through given above, it becomes extremely tricky to anticipate other people's intentions.

Yes there will be some confusion as we change back, but everyone will adapt and in another 12 months we will wonder what all the fuss was about.

Now the other thing that annoys me is drivers on the 100k open road signaling right to turn into a side road/driveway, but pulling to the left of the road to be "safe" - agghh!!!

Pulling over the to the left when you need to turn right on a state highway is an awesome rule and more people need to follow it.

So many times I have witnessed someone almost ram someone from behind as they slam on the breaks to avoid someone turning right.

One of my gribes about NZ roads. This rule is more about the lack of enter/exit lanes on major roads.

The point being made by allan is the fact they indicate a right turn but pull left.  They should indicate left pull left then when ready to turn right indicate right and turn right.

You might have noticed that over the past few months there have be a lot of turning bays put in for right turning traffic, I presume in preparation for the rule change.

Yea I agree. But I have learned while driving in this country never trust somebody indicating.

As others have already mentioned, traffic circles are where everybody is different.

As my old man used to say, the fact the indicator is going proves only one thing, - "The bulb is working"

I was also driving when the rule was changed. I thought it was stupid then and still think so and I am glad it's going back to the way.

I seem to recall that we followed some Aussie state because we thought it was a good idea but that state has since gone back to the original give way.

As a data point I have driven in the UK (for over 2 years), in the US (more than 6 years) and Oz so I can can claim to have a bit more driving experience than just NZ roads.

As an aside I love the right turn on a red that many states in the US have. It does save time and improve traffic flows. But the equivalent of left turn on a red (stopping first) is likely to cause us many problems because (and this is a personal opinion) we have a disproportionate number of silly, careless and just plain stupid drivers on the road!

SpookyAwol: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/around-nz/road-user-rule.html

Soon to be heavily advertised, but I think most know about it.

Thoughts?

Personally Im worried about roundabout confusion. Those rules haven't changed, but people are confused enough with them now. Lets make them think that they can now turn left without giving way and see where that gets us.....

People don't realise the disruption this is going to cause.

There will be a number of intersections where right turns will be outright banned to limit congestion.

So, you'll need to figure out how to reach your destination doing left turns only.

At least, that was my experience in Europe (albeit reversed for the other side of the road).

The left turn on the red was tried here in Auckland in the 1980s but the bureaucrats decided that NZ drivers were too immature to understand it. Hell they even had it in Samoa last time I was there.

Can't wait. The current law is just stupid. The person making a left turn must look 5 different ways at once and then read the minds of the drivers behind (that are going straight ahead) before taking a punt as to if to turn or not.

There will be disruption at the start, and some congestion, but over time people will find other ways to travel to their destination to minimise time and take the easiest path.

Artificial intelligence is no match, for natural stupidity
