I got a flyer in the mail yesterday:

Might be time for that new TV...

Can't read the conditions on that flyer, they say:
Discounts on stocked products only. Trade not supplied. Limit rights apply, no rainchecks or laybys. Excludes Apple, Soniq, Alienware, iPads, outright mobile phone sales, gift cards, iTunes Cards, all gaming cards, mobile phone top ups, warranties, delivery & installation. Offers not available online and valid Tuesday 12th June 2012, 6pm to 9pm only. *COST: Cost reflects the average invoiced purchase price of the product but does not include any volume related adjustments which may apply. Some products may already be below cost at time of sale.

So no need for a flyer or other silliness? Very timely, hopefully can get a new external HDD.

Cheers,
Joseph

No, I just called St Lukes, and they said you don't need the flyer or anything to get in, just show up after 6. Might also look at some nice headphones, they should be pretty good at cost I reckon.

Don't get too excited about the word "cost". The T&C has the fineprint which (as in the past) means genuine deals aren't the norm.

Yeah, that's true, but there are still some high margin products, and all those new model TVs that haven't been reduced to clear yet. I reckon there will be some bargains to be had.

The only issue with this type of sale is finding someone to help with finding out the actual cost of the product (i.e. what you pay at the till)

Lots of TV's are scan back  type deals where the retailer receives rebates based on volumes sold. The actual margins are pretty slim.

There are bargains to be had on some products, people just need to go to these types of sales without the expectation they'll get everything for 30% - 50% off. This isn't Briscoes or Godfreys.

It's hardly 'friends and family' if anyone can just rock up without a flier.
I'm sure there will be some bargains to be found, but it's just another sale... or is that just the cynic in me?

Is there any way of finding out what the price of something will be before the sale starts?

I have been thinking about getting a home theatre kit for my birthday in a couple of months (present to myself from the wife) and this could be a good oppoortunity to pick it up, but don't want to waste my time if I am only going to save $10 or something.

I doubt it.

I hate to say it but the I think idea is probably to get you in the door in the hope you will impulse buy something without doing the actual calculation on how much you'er going to save.

With something like home theater kit you might get a deal but it probably won't be on the system you want.

I doubt you'll get a deal on a receiver. Take the Onkyo amps - they must already be at cost as they're old models being cleared out (even the importer is flicking them online)... so probably not.
There will almost always be a BluRay player sold at cost, somewhere.
Panasonic DMP-BD777's were 99 dollars elsewhere over the weekend, which must(?) be under cost price, so that leaves speaker cables, sub lead + HDMI and the speakers themselves.
Of course, when it comes to speakers, the cheap deal in front of you may not actually be the best deal. After all, it's all about the quality of the sound...

I bought a canon printer at one last year. was about $40 cheaper than any of my wholesalers could sell it to me. of course JBs regular price was about the same as my wholesale prices from ingram and others... there are definitely bargains to be had, but not on everything.

Happy times.

The shift among some retailers this year to pushing only Samsung and LG televisions is really noticeable. One shop I went into had only a few token televisions not from that duo out of an extensive display range. And the lonely Panasonic plasma looked far worse than anything else there like as if the only purpose of its presence was to push the cheap Samsung plasmas surrounding it. An ST50 can't look that bad out of the box.
