Just went online to pay Rego for the car (nzta website)and used a service Called Poli, It basically controls a process of sending you to your online banking website and creates a bill payment for you - all within some strange customised Web browser. For people that don't have credit cards this is a good alternative to be able to pay online direct from your bank account... Or is it??? Is this system used anywhere else? if so how do you know it can be trusted? I only trusted it this time because its thru a government website.

I use it with Air New Zealand, no card fees that way. I would use it with Jetstar but they do not list my bank.

So is the banking website controlled by PoLi?? If I used it on some random company website how can I know its not taking me to a fake website or theres some keylogging happening in the background etc?

I've looked into Poli before. It looked dodgy the way they (probably) do it. Used to be even worse I think - they used to use an ActiveX control do do it :-O an ActiveX control having access to my online banking login? No thanks!! You have no options for chargeback (or any other protection that credit card payments offer) and nobody seems to cover the consumer in the event their system is hacked (c.f. payment express\creditcard companies\banks where I believe they will accept responsibility in the event their system is hacked) Personally I avoid using it... Up to you really; I would guess these days the likelyhood of anything going wrong is slim... but for online payments credit cards or delayed processing of incoming payments seems better to me.

I was going to use it for my rates...but it pays it now, rather than when it's due. Figured it was easier to carry on using bill payments. I've used it multiple times with Jetstar and have had no issues. Seems pretty secure to me.

I've only ever come across it on Air NZ but never used it. If NZ didn't change the rules to allow credit card surcharges it wouldn't be an issue using a credit card - but especially for the cheaper fares, the Air NZ card fees are disproportionally high and IMHO, a total rip off. Funnily enough, here in Oz CC surcharges have been common for a long time - however the government is looking at outlawing them shortly - the total opposite of what NZ did. Twitter: ajobbins

Gave it a go today on LTSA to change ownership. Didnt work on my Mac using Safari Found a PC but then got blocked by proxy. Gave up and used credit card.......

So instead of paying by credit card online, it uses your cheque/savings account to pay online and the payment goes to the merchant instantly instead of waiting the whole next day thing? My bank only does overnight processing (I think). Poli basically takes you to your online banking website, you log in and then it creates a one-off bill payment for you... it was a bit scarey really... The poli website claims it is more secure than a credit card transaction, but then I saw that the whole thing is run out of Melbourne... Australia ;P

I have had it fail on me once on the Air NZ site. Transaction appeared to hang, so I wasn't sure if I was booked or not. Phone calls to both bank and Air NZ were not helpful as bank indicated it looked as if transaction was being processed and AirNZ said booking was under way but wouldn't be confirmed until payment was received from bank. If I didn't get emailed confirmation, try again in 12 hours. It did in fact not get processed at all and I rebooked successfully the following day. So one failure out of about 8 times I've used it in total.

I tried with Air NZ but it rejected me because I'm on a mac. At least it pops up a message saying call up the call centre and use your credit card, tell them you've seen this message and they will waive the fee.

I've used it several times, in both NZ and Australia. I'm not a fan. Some implementations do not work on browsers other than IE, and the error messages are generally quite uninformative. I'll give it a go to save a few bucks, but half the time I give up and end up using my credit card instead. Nice idea, poor implementation. - David.
